Top speeding ticket Tweets: Top States – click above for the complete infographic

Getting a speeding ticket is like slamming your hand in the car door, breaking your hand and then paying the hospital bill – only worse. Mostly because after the pain of paying the ticket goes away, your insurance may be raised by hundreds of dollars per year. And if you follow friends (and Autoblog) on Twitter, you’ve likely read about someone you know getting a bloody speeding ticket.

The folks at Freeinsurancequotes.com probably know a thing or two about how a few points on your record can raise insurance rates, and they’ve decided to analyze how many Twitter users complain about tickets. The results? As you can see from the above graphic, California leads the nation in ticket Tweets by quite a percentage, followed by New York, Texas, Florida and Ohio. What’s more, a full 44 percent of those Tweets come from Los Angeles, which comes as a shock to nobody.

The top five states are perhaps a bit predictable, mainly because they represent five of the top seven most populous states in the Union. Taking a closer look at the results does show that 20 percent more Ohio residents Tweet about tickets than Illinois residents. This, in spite of the fact that the home state of the Windy City has 1.4 million more people. Ditto for New York, which takes the number two spot despite the Lone Star State having another five million residents. Check out the complete infographic after the jump.

Waze app may be the way of the navigation future

48840 waze 250 Waze app may be the way of the navigation futureNavigation has come a long way since Mapquest first hit the scene. Few of us are bumbling around our nation’s highways with print-out directions anymore thanks to the wide availability of manufacturer and aftermarket nav systems. Even most phones have some sort of turn-by-turn directions on them, but even the best systems have a hard time keeping track of up to minute variations in traffic conditions. Which is why our curiosity has been peaked by the Waze app.

The concept is pretty simple. Users drive around with the app open on their phone and the program samples GPS data to determine whether traffic is moving at speed or at a standstill. From there, you can report accidents, speed traps or road work to keep those around you from winding up in the same mess. Meanwhile, you can check the status of traffic on alternate roads around you thanks to the same technology.

Waze is also on the verge of rolling out a handful of new features that should improve the experience, including Twitter and Facebook integration. Instead of just sampling other Waze users, the program will cull through tweets from all over the globe. If someone happens to take the time to shoot off a tweet that says traffic on Mullholland sucks, you’ll get a notification if you’re headed in that direction. We’ve yet to get a chance to play with the app in traffic, but it sounds handy. For more info, check out the Waze guided tour.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is upon us, and that means plenty of racing, loads of beautiful cars and perhaps unannounced sneak-peaks of future models. Problem is, many of us won’t be in West Sussex, England this weekend (don’t worry, we’re already there). Dunlop’s Inside Racing site recognizes this and has set up a live video feed of many of the events at Goodwood. Beyond the live feed Dunlop also provides an opportunity to submit questions to the team, along with Facebook and Twitter sites so you can keep up on all the action. Dunlop has also archived some of the best interviews and footage if the live action isn’t exciting enough.

Head over to Inside Racing Live to catch a glimpse of what’s going on across the pond and stay tuned to Autoblog for a raft of posts and pics from our very own Drew Phillips.

We hinted at it in our review, but it’s time to make it official. Welcome the newest entrant to the Autoblog Long-Term Garage: the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition.

So why, with the all-new Jetta right around the corner, would we bring the TDI Cup into the hallowed halls of Autoblog Towers? Simple. We want to get intimate with diesel. Not only do we want to reap the high-mileage benefits of ultra-low sulfur dino-juice, we want to see if something with a TDI badge can, in fact, be an entertaining drive over the long haul.

We explored the Cup’s backroad prowess in our review, but how will it fare at the track? Will a new set of tires and wheels make a world of difference? How about some upgraded brake pads? In stock form, does it have what it takes to compete with the latest and greatest in the new fuel-conscious sporty car segment? How will it hold up after thousands of miles, a few road trips and stints across the country with our editors? All these questions and more will be answered over the course of a year.

We’ll be keeping you updated on the TDI’s progress with weekly and monthly posts, highlighting the finer points and questioning the logic of others. More importantly, we’re interested in what you want to know about the Jetta TDI Cup Edition. Tell us in Comments and we’ll get cracking.

Additionally, we’ve set up a specific page to follow the TDI’s progress, complete with updates, specs and other useful info. Check it out and follow us on Twitter at TheRealAutoblog for 140-character morsels of insight tagged #ablongterm.

The fun is about to begin, and the only question now is: What’s first?

Nagare no more? Mazda to change styling direction

18fc2 mazda furai Nagare no more? Mazda to change styling direction

Mazda Furai Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

According to Auto Express, Mazda Europe’s British design boss Peter Birtwhistle has confirmed that the Japanese automaker will take on a new styling direction. Perhaps the news shouldn’t come as a shocker, considering that former Mazda design head Franz von Holhausen, the man responsible for the previous styling direction of concepts like the Nagare and Furai, left Mazda for Tesla Motors back in 2008.

Further, Laurens van den Acker, who styled the latest Mazda5, left the Japanese automaker for Renault. As such, Birtwhistle told AE, “Nagare is done. After the 5, it’s highly unlikely that there will be another Nagare car. Mazda has moved on.” Apparently, Mazda found it rather difficult to apply the swoopy and flowing conceptual styling direction to production cars, specifically boxier shapes like that of the Mazda5.

We tend to agree with Mazda that the Nagare look is awesome on concepts but tough to translate to production. So, what’s next? Apparently, Mazda will attempt to turn itself into a “Japanese Alfa Romeo,” with an initial concept based on its new “Thrusting Motion” styling direction. We should see the fruits of this early effort at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

Hyundai 5.0 to take on Mustang with 429 horsepower?

Hyundai Genesis Coupe – Click above for high-res image gallery

“Anything you can do, I can do better” might be playing on the loudspeakers in Korea right now, as Hyundai is apparently set to introduce a bored out version of the formerly 4.6-liter Tau V8 for action in the Genesis Sedan and Equus. More interestingly, this new 5.0 may do duty in the Genesis Coupe as well. This new 5.0-liter V8 was mentioned during a media event at Hyundai R&D and if the claimed numbers are legit, this Mustang-challenger will produce a few more ponies than the Blue Oval bruiser. Where Ford is getting 412 horsepower from its five-point-oh in the 2011 Mustang, Hyundai says its 5.0-liter V8 will be packing 429 hp when it reaches production.

No official word from the South Korean automaker yet, but this new direct-injection 5.0 in sure to be fitted to the Genesis Sedan for 2011, reportedly backed by a new eight-speed automatic transmission developed by Hyundai. Chances are it will eventually find its way under the hood of the Genesis Coupe, possibly backed by a proper stick. Hyundai is apparently launching the Equus with the 4.6-liter Tau, but the new flagship sedan will get the upgraded mill soon after, right about the time the upgraded 2011 Genesis Sedan appears. The output figures being reported are 429 hp at 6,500 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm, with an 11.5:1 compression ratio – a healthy jump above the 385 hp, 333 ft-lb for the 4.6 liter V8 currently found in the Genesis Sedan.

If the 5.0 does show up in the Coupe, we will definitely have to revisit our comparison test subjects from last month. These arms races can start so innocently, but never end well, so don’t be surprised to see Ford’s 5.0 get a bump if this comes to fruition.

eb9fc audir8tweet Audi wants to put you and your Tweet in an R8

Perhaps you’ve heard the one about Audi taking the top three slots at a little race called Le Mans? Well, Audi would like you to make sure that the rest of the world hears about it, and as enticement the Quattro-meisters are offering a chance to win a trip to the Audi Sportscar Experience at Infineon Raceway and a seat in a brand-spanking-new R8.

You’ll need a twitter account and a knowledge of pointing-and-clicking. Once you get that sorted, head to the contest page and follow the absurdly simple instruction of sending a tweet. If you’re really into it, you can re-enter the contest up to 25 more times (for 26 in total), which would make Audi – and maybe your Piloti racing shoes – really happy. Best hurry, though – the contest ends today. After that you’ll have to buy your own R8…

Report: Auto Czar Montgomery stepping down

3b709 ed montgomery Report: Auto Czar Montgomery stepping down

Ed Montgomery, the gentleman who helped usher General Motors and Chrysler through some of the most difficult times in both companies’ histories, has stepped down from his position as the Auto Recovery Czar for the Obama Administration. Montgomery had been at his post for just 15 months, during which time he managed to shell out an unprecedented amount of aid for two of America’s ailing auto manufacturers. The move kept the lights on, the factories humming and workers paid as both GM and Chrysler worked their ways through bankruptcy.

Montgomery was just named dean of school public policy at Georgetown University, and will likely be spending his days there instead of fretting over whether or not the American auto industry can keep its head above water. Despite things looking up for both bailed-out companies, the Obama Administration says that Montgomery’s vacant seat will be filled sooner rather than later, though no one knows who will be picked for the job. Until then, his duties will fall on the shoulders of Larry Summers, the current director of the National Economic Council.

Sometimes, it’s the unlikely stuff that gets the best reactions. At a show where the supercar circle boasted the likes of a Schuppan 962CR and James Glickenhaus’ Ferrari P4/5, across the field, car of decidedly more modest origin was cultivating an equally-delighted group of fans for itself. Yes, it is the opposite of a supercar, but this ‘76 Volga GAZ-24 was easily one of the highlights of the show, if you ask us.

Wedged between a grey Facel Vega coupe and a delectable Citroen DS, the deep red Volga was beautifully turned out, with blinding whitewall tires, velour-accented seats, neat logo mudflaps, airbrushed hammer-and-sickle art on the hood, and probably the most appropriate vanity plates ever. The car was even wore its own fur hat.

When we asked the owner to open the hood for us so we could grab a quick photo, he apologetically said, “Oh, there’s not much to see,” as he lifted it to reveal the clean inline-four. “Besides, if I keep it open, no one can see the artwork!” Smiles all around as folks gathered to ogle this Cold War curiosity, which you’re just about as likely to see on the road as any of the exotics that were parked a few hundred feet away. In its own way, it’s every bit as cool.

DetNews: Congressmen accuse GM of destroying documents

f29b8 gm 250 DetNews: Congressmen accuse GM of destroying documentsAccording to The Detroit News, General Motors has been asked to stop destroying electronic documents by the U.S. House Oversight Committee. Representatives Darrell Issa (R-California) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) have sent a letter to GM CEO Ed Whitacre requesting that the company to halt its policy of destroying all electronic documents after 60 days for fear that evidence pertinent to investigations concerning the company’s repayment of federal loans is being erased. In the letter, neither Issa nor Jordan point to any specific instance where theoretically deleted evidence could have been helpful in the committee’s investigations.

GM has found itself in the crosshairs of a number of queries from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, including everything from the reasoning behind the choice of certain new plant locations and a supposed secret agreement to help support new fuel-economy standards proposed by the Obama administration to the company’s ads bragging about full repayment of its government loans.

At this point, it’s difficult to tell whether this is a political witch hunt or two senators doing their best to keep an eye on GM’s activities. Either way, we can pretty much say so much for the government staying out of the carmaker’s day-to-day business.

79d1a chevy volt grille Followup: GM says feel free to say Chevy *UPDATE

Were you one of the many that thought the apocalypse must be nigh for General Motors to suggest that we should stop referring to Chevrolet as ‘Chevy’?” Yeah, we understand. After all, the nickname is as American as baseball and apple pie… or something like that.

With that in mind, GM has issued a clarification on its official Facebook page as well as in an official statement (available after the jump), blaming a “poorly worded memo” for the kerfuffle. Further, GM seeks to reassure the masses that they are free to refer to Chevrolet as Chevy if they so choose (whew!). Says The General, “In fact, we like when people call it “Chevy.” It reflects 100 years of history and connection with the American People.”

So, it would seem that we can call off the dogs, so to speak. But we feel obliged to make one thing clear – Do not expect General Motors to refer to its most popular marque as ‘Chevy’ moving forward:

In global markets, we are establishing a significant presence for Chevrolet, and need to move toward a consistent brand name for advertising and marketing purposes. The memo in question was one step in that process.

So… has this been much ado about nothing, or are you still miffed? Check out the release after the jump, and then have your say in ‘Comments.’

*UPDATE: GM social media spokesperson Joe LaMuraglia has confirmed via Twitter that GM “will use Chevrolet in our branding and messaging for brand consistency.”

We’ll provide a full recap of the 2010 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance later, but this morning, we wanted to share one of the cooler vehicles on display with you – and while it has gullwing doors and is as exotic as it gets, it’s not even a car. While Cold War-era American astronauts were fished out of the drink by the U.S. Navy after splashdown, Soviet cosmonauts at the time faced a different set of risks when their spacecraft returned to Earth – namely, the possibility of landing in the Siberian wilderness. As such, a recovery vehicle was needed that could traverse varied terrain, operate in sub-zero temperatures, and move fast. Enter Russian aviation legend Aleksei Tupolev. His solution is seen here: the Tupolev 007 aerosled.

The shallow-draft craft is powered by a 9-cylinder Vedenyev M14P radial aircraft engine generating 365 horsepower. Its interesting double-propeller is actually fixed, with the rear prop drafting the front blades to increase efficiency and make operation quieter. At speeds above 50 mph, the driver can engage an airfoil to lift the nose, allowing the 007 to skim the surface, meaning it can race across lakes, marshes, and snow with equal aplomb. The design reportedly won Tupolev the Diploma of Finest Engineer in the USSR (give the Soviets this: they had a flair for super-impressive-sounding awards), and you can go see it yourself if you’re within easy travel distance of Greenwich, CT.

Day 2 of the 15th Annual Greenwich Concours d’Elegance runs today from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM EDT, with foreign cars the featured element. Admission at the door is $25 (proceeds help benefit AmeriCares), and believe us, it’s money well spent. We’ll be there later today as well, and you can follow our tweets from the show by searching on the hashtag #GCDE.

Rejoice, Bimmer fans. If you thought the new BMW interest in the world of hybrids and EVs spelt the beginning of the end for your favorite driving machine, think again. Word has surfaced that the company is planning a multitude of different versions of its Megacity EV, including at least one sports car. While chatting with Autocar, Ian Robertson, the head honcho of sales and marketing for the company, said that the Megacity will be made primarily of carbon fiber in order to hit weight targets, and that it will in fact be sold under the BMW banner instead of a newly-minted nameplate.

That’s all fine and good, but what about this sports car? The publication cites an unnamed BMW board member as saying that the Megacity platform will spawn multiple variations. Combine that with word from Inside Line that the Bavarian automaker is mulling the creation of a genuine sports car to compete with the likes of the Audi R8 and Mercedes-Benz SL, and you’ve got a recipe for a genuine EV bruiser. Word has it that the creation would be sculpted in the image of the Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept.

The IL crew also says that there’s also plenty of indication that the ever lovely Grand Coupé will inspire the replacement model for the current 6 Series by late 2012. That’s no bad thing in our book.

Keep in mind that all of this is still quite a ways off, though. The Megacity isn’t expected to see the light of day until 2013 at the earliest, and any other progeny would crop up in the years to follow. In the automotive universe, a lot can change in two years.

Over the last few months, we’ve had some time to come to grips with how comfy and capacious the interior is in our long-term 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT, but despite this, we think it could still do with a sportier feeling cabin. A big part of the staidness of the interior can be blamed on our test car’s spears of orangey woodgrain trim – we would have gladly substituted the silver trim in lower-rung models, but it wasn’t an option.

Thankfully, Subaru has recognized the incongruity – and the opportunity – and they’re substituting faux carbon fiber for the 2011 model year, which ought to be a great improvement and help sell the ‘performance’ aura. Better still, they’re adding aluminum pedal covers and silver seat stitching which should definitely liven up the place a bit.

Pricing for the 2011 model – now in ‘Limited’ trim only – goes up by $405 to $31,395. but includes Harman/Kardon audio with XM – two items that cost extra in our 2010. They’re also adding folding side mirrors, which should make at least one AB commenter we’ve heard from very happy. Either way the modest price increase is money very well spent in our book. Now, if Subaru would only make its excellent Xenon headlamps available as an option (they’ve already got the switch blank for the beam adjuster in place next to the power mirror controls), we’d be even happier campers…

e6521 x04chcr007 NHTSA reportedly investigating C5 Corvette over leaky fuel tanks

We don’t need to tell you why a leaky fuel tank can be a big hazard. Something about flammable liquid seeping out from underneath a car raises a huge red flag, and now the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 33,000 2004 model year Chevrolet Corvettes over this very issue. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA has received 30 complaints from owners claiming that either liquid fuel or fuel vapor has been leaking from a tank.

Alan Adler, a spokesperson for GM, says that the automaker isn’t aware of any injuries or accidents resulting from this problem. Furthermore, GM plans to fully cooperate with NHTSA on this investigation in order to promptly resolve the problem. In 12 of the 30 complaints filed with NHTSA, a fuel tank was replaced or identified as the source of the leak, and we assume that a quick recall will be in order to prevent further instances.

Report: Chrysler Sebring name to live on, at least until all-new model arrives

e8c4e ch010011se Report: Chrysler Sebring name to live on, at least until all new model arrives

Despite the fact it adorns one of the most derided cars on the U.S. market today, the Sebring badge will apparently survive for at least another couple of years. Recent reports had indicated that Chrysler wanted to make a clean break with its refreshed mid-sized sedan later this year by applying the name Nassau, last used on a 2007 concept car.

However, the cost of launching an all-new brand, which is estimated at $100 million, convinced the staff in Auburn Hills and Turin that it might be better to hold off until an all-new car was ready to hit the streets. Unfortunately, that’s still some time off. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of an automaker retaining a tainted brand because of the high cost of marketing a new one. General Motors opted to keep the Aveo name for its new B-segment Chevrolet that’s arriving next year for that very reason.

Frankly, we’d rather see $100 million spent on creating a better car that can sell itself than on trying to market a new name.

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of its historic victory in the famed Mille Miglia automobile race in Brescia, when the classic BMW 328 not only finished in first place but also in third, fifth and sixth places, thereby ensuring overall team victory as well, the German automaker has announced that it will build just 99 examples of the limited edition Z4 sDrive35is Mille Miglia.

Setting this car apart from other Z4s, each Mille Miglia edition will be finished in a coat of matte Polaris Metallic with a blacked-out front grill, an M aero kit and 19-inch wheels finished in Dark Chrome. Inside, the seats and steering wheel will get a dash of red stitching. And of course, the limited edition model will also get unique badging inside and out.

Power will come from the standard 340-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six, mated up to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. In somewhat related news, BMW has also recreated a classic 328 Kamm Coupé to take part in this year’s Mille Miglia festivities. Check out the press release after the break for more.
