A few images of the new Chinese-market long-wheelbase have made their way to the web. The vehicle’s profile clearly shows a few extra inches of room for rear passengers, though the additional space between the front and rear wheels doesn’t infringe too heavily on the sedan’s design.
With a slightly longer rear door and expanded rear cabin, the 335Li is designed for buyers who would rather be driven than drive. That’s a big plus for the chauffeur-oriented Chinese luxury vehicle market. From what we hear, the vehicle is headed toward an official debut at the in April.
In addition to more rear legroom, the BMW 335Li will likely feature a new 8.8-inch freestanding control display mounted atop the vehicle’s dash. An auto start-stop system is expected to debut on the vehicle to help increase fuel economy, and a blind-spot awareness system is expected to be standard equipment, as well. Head over to the for a better look at the elongated 3 Series.
is serving up an impressive smattering of Mopar accessories for the 2013 Dodge Dart, including a host of performance parts. All told, buyers will be able to chose from a total of 150 accessories that range from an integrated Wi-Fi system to aerodynamic additions.
Chrysler says the Dart will feature the industry’s first wireless charging system for phones and other battery-powered gadgets. Users simply install a device-specific case and lay the hardware in a specific charging zone. The device then gets its battery topped off without the hassle of plugging up wires. Handy. Of course, we’re more interested in bits like the available 18-inch wheels and performance brake upgrade, which includes new calipers, rotors and performance pads.
In addition, Chrysler is hoping to thwart would-be thieves with a new electronic vehicle tracking system. The automaker partnered with Guidepoint Systmes, a leading company in GPS-based vehicle recovery systems, to provide tracking from coast to coast without a subscription. for the press release and head over to the Mopar site for a look at the full list of available options.
is making a big splash at this year, finally bringing a booth to the party and trotting out Daimler head Dr. Dieter Zetsche to keynote Tuesday morning’s festivities.
The big news is the introduction of mBrace2, Mercedes’ new cloud-based entertainment and information delivery system that debuts on the and proliferating through the Benz lineup in 2013.
We just wrapped up a hands-on with the prototype system (coming soon), but if you’re looking for a thoroughly updated COMAND interface, you’re in for disappointment.
The same beige and black user interface carries over with mBrace2, but there’s attractive news on the horizon. Mercedes tells us that an all-new and completely redesigned interface is due to debut on the 2014 , which will drop the 90s-era graphics for a more modern, intuitive design. And if it’s anything like the system Mercedes showed off with the , things are finally looking up for Benz infotainment.
A plethora of new diesel offerings is driving sales, according to a new report from the Diesel Technology Forum. Sales of diesels rose 27.4 percent in 2011, according to numbers from HybridCars.com and market researchers Baum and Associates.
The Diesel Technology Forum pegs the overall market growth in 2011 at 10.2 percent, putting diesels’ increase considerably ahead of the curve. Interestingly enough, the group says hybrid sales were down 2.2 percent. The non-profit coalition of diesel engine and technology companies includes such auto industry heavyweights as , Daimler, , General Motors, and .
Diesel sales are expected to grow to over six percent of the U.S. market by 2015, according to the report, and could reach as high as 7.4 percent by 2017, as more diesel models hit the market. Diesel-powered versions of the , , , and are slated for near-term U.S. release, according to the group.
has announced that the will be priced from $22,000, *not including destination charges. That’s a healthy jump from the tiny Italian’s $15,500 base MSRP and higher still than the open-air that starts at $19,500. For all that extra lira, buyers get Fiat’s turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir engine producing 160 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed through a five-speed manual transmission and the super Cinquecento also receives an upgraded suspension and brakes, 16-inch wheels and dual exhaust system. The cost of admission also includes free tuition to the Abarth Driving Experience hosted by The Richard Petty Driving Experience.
The Fiat 500 Abarth can be difficult to place among its class competitors because it’s the smallest kid on the block, but we’ve constructed a handy-dandy table to compare pricing, power and weight-to-power ratios for some likely adversaries. Despite being the smallest in size, the Abarth 500 actually ends up with the highest weight-to-power ratio. The upcoming stands out as having the least amount for each horse to lug around, though without pricing information, the Abarth 500 presently stands as the least expensive in-road to the kingdom of hot hatches.
is recalling nearly half a million vehicles in two separate actions announced today by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Just over 244,000 crossovers from model year 2001 and 2002 are being recalled for potentially leaky brake master cylinder reservoir caps, while nearly 206,000 2004 and 2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans may have defective torque converter output shafts.
NHTSA says that in the case of the Escape, leaking brake fluid could cause corrosion on an electrical connector in the antilock brake system wiring harness, leading to “melting, smoke or a fire.” Ford will begin notifying owners the week of Jan. 23, although a parts delay is expected to postpone repairs. “Ford will instruct owners to park their vehicles outside until such time as parts become available,” says NHTSA.
The minivan recall is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012, and will result in dealers inspecting and replacing the torque converter in affected vehicles.
The 2012 Toyota Aygo is here with better looks, better fuel economy and emissions and better equipment. It’s the supermini’s first serious overhaul since it was introduced in 2005, and it borrows some of its aesthetic chops from the recently unveiled . A bulldog-y stance is emphasized with a jutting lower front bumper with a wide trapezoidal opening, while the lines above have been slenderized.
The carryover 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine has been tweaked for efficiency; its 67 horsepower and 69 pound-feet of torque remain the same, but rowing the five-speed manual will now get you 65.7 Imperial (54.7 U.S.) miles per gallon combined. You’ll also hear less of it and the transmission due to increased sound deadening.
Trim options will include new hubcaps, seven exterior hues, a new unified finish on the instrument panel, and a new steering wheel backed by paddle shifters. It might look like just another tiny Eurocar, but the previous Aygo still earned the title of , and that’s a recommendation not to be trifled with. Pricing and other details will follow closer to its on-sale date, for now, there’s a press release with more info.
The is only a few months from hitting dealer floors, which makes this as good a time as any to release pricing. The ActiveHybrid 5 will start at $61,845, *including a $895 destination and handling charge.
That’s about $8,000 more than the 535i, but the extra coin will go towards a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine that packs 335 horsepower when combined with a 55-horsepower electric motor. That’s enough power to launch the ActiveHybrid 5 from zero to 60 in a scant 5.7 seconds and the lithium-ion battery pack carries sufficient juice for the ActiveHybrid 5 to travel 2.5 miles on electricity alone.
The ActiveHybrid 5 arrives in dealerships this spring. Hit the jump to read BMW’s uncharacteristically brief press release.
The Detroit News reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has concluded its investigations into both the Honda Accord Hybrid and the without ordering either automaker to issue a recall. NHTSA began looking into models after a fatal traffic accident was initially attributed to unintended acceleration. The agency found no evidence of a mechanical or safety issue in the vehicles.
NHTSA had also received 18 complaints of fuel spilling from the filler port on certain 2003-2004 Kia Sorento models. found the vehicles’ fuel evaporation system featured a canister filter that could become clogged over time. As a result, excess pressure could build up in the fuel tank, causing gasoline to regurgitate back out of the filler neck. The canister requires regular service, but isn’t mentioned in the owner’s manual. According to The Detroit News, Kia has agreed to conduct a service campaign involving around 86,000 2003-2004 Sorento models.
Press days for the have now officially ended, and a quick survey of our yield reveals more highly anticipated production vehicles and concepts than we’ve seen since the days when The heyday of press conference theatrics may be behind us, but the vehicles themselves have begun to return. Check out the lot of them from this year’s Detroit show below.
Three years (on top of ) is a long time to wait for the second coming of the Acura NSX. Measured in Internet time, it’s an infinite opportunity for speculation about the whys and hows of the new car. Aside from the new supercar’s , the most shocking part of is that the car will be built in Ohio. Honda has an engine plant, a transmission plant, two assembly plants and a research and development center in the state, so this shouldn’t be treated with the same level of surprise as if, say, announced it would start building cars in Kansas.
Yet it’s still a big change for the exotic , which was manufactured in Japan during its entire first-generation lifecycle, from 1990-2005. When the NSX debuted, part of its appeal was that it represented the pinnacle of Japanese technology and quality, at a time when Japanese automakers were absolutely crushing the competition in both. Times have changed, but we still suspect that a number of fanboys might be disappointed that the second-generation NSX will be built by gaijin.
We spoke with American CEO and president Tetsuo Iwamura about the decision to develop and manufacture the NSX here in the U.S., and he told us that the decision was made for three reasons. The first is that Honda is committed to . The U.S. is the largest market for the NSX, although he said the car will be exported to Japan and other markets.
When asked if there was any concern that Japanese customers might have objections to a Japanese supercar built in the U.S., Iwamura said, “You don’t have to be so modest. American-built cars have a power, even in Japan.”
The second factor was that Honda has had positive experiences with product development of other models here in the States. Iwamura specifically mentioned the North American market-only and as examples. The third reason for the decision to build the NSX here is that Honda believes its produce high-quality products and wants to take advantage of that expertise. Iwamura also said that assigning the halo car to the U.S. would be motivational for its American employees.
Currency fluctuation, however, was not a consideration, according to the Honda chief. While he said that would indeed be the case with a mass-market model, the limited-production nature of the NSX makes the effect of a strong yen a moot point. Regardless of where its built, Iwamura said the main consideration in bringing the NSX back to market is its technology, quality and performance, just as the original did. The NSX is an important part of modern automotive history, a literal poster-child of the ’90s, so we’re certainly rooting for this new exotic Buckeyemobile to deliver on all fronts.
We’ve just returned from a media roundtable with Klaus Draeger, member of the Board of BMW AG, Development, and he’s helped shed some light on both some near- and far-term developments for in the States.
Draeger confirmed that BMW has absolutely no plans to expand the lineup in the U.S. with a hatchback variant like the . While Draeger says that the 1 Series has done a “wonderful job” for BMW, he notes that the model is positioned very differently in the U.S. and Europe. In the States, the 1 Series is a car for hardcore driving enthusiasts, but in Europe, with its fuller range of (primarily lower-power) engines and bodystyles, the 1 Series is positioned as more of a family car – an entry point to the brand (70 percent of European 1 Series buyers are new to BMW).
In the short-term, Draeger confirmed that the 740i six-cylinder model will receive the company’s xDrive all-wheel drive system before the end of the year. The system is currently available on the V8-powered 750i, but with the biggest market for the being the New York tri-state area, not having the additional foul weather performance of xDrive in the I6 has left a vacuum in the model lineup.
In more general terms, Draeger says we can expect to see electric power steering and start/stop systems in all BMWs, and indeed, a number of models in the company’s portfolio already feature the fuel-saving technologies.
Also on the fuel-saving front, Draeger says that diesel sales are going well in the States, accounting for roughly one-third of sales. Despite that, the will not get a diesel variant, as the current model only has two or three years left in its life and it wouldn’t make sense to introduce one this late in life. However, he wouldn’t rule one out for the next-gen X6, nor was he willing to preclude a diesel’s inclusion in the new . The new generation and current are also likely candidates for oil burning motivation, but they won’t happen this calendar year.
When asked if BMW is happy with X6 sales, Draeger said “Yes. Absolutely.” As a followup question, Draeger was asked if it then made sense to do a similar variant on the X3, and he said “Yes. Yes.” Unfortunately, he wasn’t at liberty to elaborate.
Finally, BMW officially announced yesterday that its smallest crossover, the X1, will go on sale here soon (likely ), but Draeger maintains that there is “no real synergy” to justify bringing production to the U.S.
In between debuting the and on the floor of the today, thought it right to bring out two brown cars that are actually green: diesel and gasoline flavors of the hybrid. In fact, the E300 diesel hybrid is so efficient that Mercedes calls it the “world’s most economical luxury-class model.” Unsurprisingly, the diesel will launch in Europe while the gas-powered E400 hybrid will arrive first in America and will later come to Japan, China and other countries. Pricing for the E-Class hybrids has not yet been announced, but Mercedes says the “extra cost involved here is only moderate.”
during the slow-burning teaser month of December, the diesel-fueled BlueTec hybrid is expected to get 56 miles per gallon (on the European scale, so around 45 mpg in the U.S.) and the gas-electric E400 Hybrid will get 27 mpg (U.S.). The numbers for the E300 are based on the sedan (saloon) versions; it will also be available in estate (station wagon) form. The E-Class hybrids use a combination of lithium-ion batteries, start-stop, regenerative brakes and the ability to “sail” to save fuel. Sailing here means that, at speeds of up to 100 mph, the combustion engine can switch off while the electric motor keeps the car moving as long as the 0.8-kWh battery has enough power.
Since this is Mercedes, the cars also perform well: the E300 BlueTec offers 204 horsepower from the four-cylinder diesel powerplant and another 27 hp from the electric motor. The gas-powered E400 gives up 306 hp, plus the 27 hp. The E300 hybrid has a top speed of 150 miles per hour and goes 0-62 in in 7.5 seconds, while the E400 hybrid can hit 130 mph and does 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. Or, as Damiler’s chairman of the board, Dieter Zetsche, put it this during the press conference in Detroit: Mercedes is “making green cars cooler and cool cars greener.”
It’s been a while since had a roadster in its product portfolio. Since the XLR went out of production at the end of 2009, to be precise. But while the (and its high-performance counterpart, the ) may fill the niche for a svelte wreath-badged two-door, Cadillac may be planning on something a little more windy – and more affordable – in the near future.
According to our compatriots over at Inside Line, Cadillac is considering spinning a two-seat roadster off the rear-wheel-drive platform of the new sedan. If given the green light, the ATS roadster would likely be positioned squarely at the likes of the and , maximizing the use of the ATS platform while giving The General a potentially intriguing rival to its German competitors.
With in-car technology coming fast and furious at this week’s and the , it seems like the perfect week for , , and to announce a new “Technology of the Year” Award program that will reward the best purveyors of new tech, and serve as a useful hub of info for our readers.
At CES today, AOL Autos Editor-in-Chief David Kiley is announcing the new award, which will be rolled out throughout 2012, with a winner presented with the laurels at next year’s CES.
A panel of judges will be evaluating new or improved tech in the categories of telematics, connectivity and active safety. The judging panel includes Kiley, Autoblog editor-in-chief John Neff, Engadget editor-in-chief Tim Stevens, Autoblog senior editor Damon Lavrinc, AOL Autos Tech Editor Jeff Sabatini, and HuffingtonPost auto industry senior editor Sharon Silke Carty. The judging board also includes Tony Fadell, founder of www.nest.com, who is also the former Apple engineer often referred to as “The Father of the iPod. Author Lauren “The Car Coach” Fix, and Shelby “The Teen Car Coach” Fix are also judges.
AOL Autos has also assembled this unique judging panel to evaluate technology advances introduced each year and will name the best at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show.
“AOL Autos is the obvious source to bring together the best and brightest arbiters of automotive and electronic communications hardware into one industry award,” explained Kiley. “Tapping into the expertise of AOL Autos, Autoblog, and Engadget, AOL is uniquely positioned to evaluate and ultimately name an annual Technology of the Year winner.”
You can go to the homepage of the award program, , which explains the award parameters, lists stories about new tech that will be eligible for nomination this year, as well as an opportunity to win a Samsung flat-screen TV and Roku if you sign up for our Tech of the Year e-newsletter this week, which will keep you up to date on all the new eligible technology.
Finalists for the award will be announced at the . And between the LA Auto Show and CES, said Kiley, “Our readers will have an opportunity to cast votes for the best tech, and their consensus winner will carry the weight of one judge on the panel.” Said Kiley, “Even if our readers don’t have the chance to test the technology themselves, we want to know what they think about our coverage and the concepts they are reading about.”
has surpassed for the largest number of recalled vehicles in 2011. Wards Auto reports that Honda expanded an airbag recall to encompass a total of 2.5 million million vehicles last year, pushing the total number of recalled units to 3.9 million vehicles over 17 campaigns. Previous estimates put with 13 campaigns covering 3.5 million vehicles.
The airbag recall covers some of the most popular Honda models, including , Civic Hybrid and sedans manufactured between 2001 and 2004, as well as the and . The Acura CL and were also included.
Toyota, meanwhile, found itself correcting issues with accelerator pedals and floor mats associated with the company’s unintended acceleration woes. Toyota had found itself leading the largest number of recalled vehicles for two consecutive years prior to 2011.
C is for Cookie. At least, that’s what the baking industry lobbyist known as Cookie Monster would have us believe. At they have another idea, where C is not for Cookie, it’s not for Car and it’s not for Compact. In the latest addition to the family, C is for City.
What you’re looking at is a new, smaller hybrid from Toyota, which is eagerly growing the Prius range from one four-door to include the (for Versatility), the Prius plug-in hybrid and this, the Prius C. It’s both smaller and more affordable than the existing Prius range, while delivering superlative fuel economy figures. In fact, with a 50-mpg combined rating, the Prius C claims the best economy of any car this side of a plug-in EV.
Motivation is provided by a 1.5-liter four that, together with the electric motor, delivers up to 99 horsepower at peak (compared to the Prius liftback’s 134hp). It’s also more nimble than its bigger brother, and more affordable: when the Prius C reaches showrooms in the spring, it will wear a sticker price under $19,000. In the meantime, you can check out our gallery of high-resolution images from the show floor above, the stock images below and for more details.
used the bright lights of the to unveil the ; a mite-sized crossover that will be smaller than other vehicles in its class. In fact, the Encore is only 168 inches long, and its wheelbase is only 104.8 inches across. Even with those diminutive proportions, the Encore still manages to house 48 cubic feet of cargo with the second-row seats folded flat. The front passenger seat also folds for additional storage.
Buick also worked hard to distinguish the cabin of the Encore, with active noise cancellation that design boss Ed Welburn claims will be among the quietest in its class. The Encore will also feature Buick IntelliLink, which includes a seven-inch LCD screen plus Bluetooth that works with smart phones for hands-free calling and access to Pandora and Stitcher.
The Encore will be powered by the same 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine currently under the hood of the and . The mini mill pumps out 140 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. That’s not a lot of power, but keep in mind that the Encore rides on a revised version of the Chevy Sonic platform.

can justifiably be proud of its position not only as one of the largest automakers in the world, but also the world leader in hybrid vehicles. In fact, the Japanese automaker claims that half of all hybrids sold are Toyotas. But it didn’t get there by resting on its proverbial laurels, and it isn’t going to maintain (let alone increase) its market share by doing so, either. That’s where the concept car you see here comes in.
Taking position as something of a of the future, the NS4 concept cuts a striking profile – certainly more striking than the current kamm-tailed Prius. But even though the technologies it encompasses are targeted to reach the market by around 2015, the show-car details – like that eminently dentable front beak -probably won’t.
While Toyota works on all manner of electric and fuel cell powertrains, the NS4 packs a similar plug-in hybrid system as the current Prius PHEV. But the show car encompasses a slew of other technologies, like a smartphone-like interface to monitor and control everything from the air conditioning to the battery charge.
Toyota has also packed the NS4 with its latest pre-collision and blind-spot monitoring systems, adaptive headlights and four new types of glass – the one part of the car we probably take most for granted. Of course, this being a concept car, Toyota has also replaced the side mirrors with an around-view camera system, but laws being what they are for now, don’t expect to see that in showrooms just yet.
There’s plenty more technological details to digest in the press release , but for a closer look check out the high-res galleries of live shots from the show floor here in Detroit and the stock images from the automaker.
In true fashion, we’re once again presented with a “concept” car that’s only a set of wheels and a de-Bedazzling away from being production-ready. What you’re looking at here is the concept that previews the next-generation that will be dropping later this year, ready to compete with a full slate of redesigned mid-size sedans.
Honda has once again taken a conservative approach to design, and while it’s certainly handsome (except for those gaudy air intakes that flank both sides of the front fascia), we can’t help but think that it already looks one or two generations old. (2009 Kia Optima, anyone?) We’ll have to wait until we see the car in its production spec before making final judgments, but with sexy new mid-size offerings like the , and , the Accord doesn’t look to be gunning for shoppers who want a whole lot of style with their substance.
Substance, though, it definitely has. The base engine is a new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder with direct injection, putting 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque to the ground via a continuously variable transmission. Honda will continue to offer a V6 in the Accord – a dying trend in this segment – measuring 3.5 liters, mated to either a manual or automatic transmission, both with six gears.
The Accord Hybrid will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes – all-electric, gasoline-electric and “direct-drive.”
What’s really interesting, though, is that the 2013 model marks the return of the Accord Hybrid – a vehicle that died after the 2007 model year. This time, however, the Accord will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes – all-electric, gasoline-electric and “direct-drive” – with a 6-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 120-kilowatt electric motor mated to a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine. Honda says that the Accord Plug-In will have a pure electric range of 10-15 miles with a top speed of 62 miles per hour, and that recharging the battery will take less than four hours with a 120-volt charger, or less than 1.5 hours with a 240-volt setup. Not bad, Honda.
Naturally, Honda will pack the 2013 Accord with all of its latest safety technologies, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, blind-spot detection and a multi-angle rear-view camera. We expect to see the production car debut in the not-too-distant future (, perhaps?) with the 2013 model officially hitting dealerships this fall. The Accord Plug-In will arrive a little later, in winter. Hungry for more details? to read Honda’s official press blast.
