Small wagons might not have much of a place in the United States, but overseas, they do very well, thank you. Take the Opel Astra, for example – its wagon variant accounts for around 25 percent of its overall sales. Thus, Opel hasn’t wasted any time in creating the wagon (Sports Tourer) version of the new Astra, and while it will make its public debut this October at the Paris Motor Show, General Motors is already spilling the virtual beans.

Inside, the Astra Sports Tourer uses a new FlexFold rear seat system, which allows rear seats to be folded down simply by pressing a button in the tailgate. We commonly see this feature on larger SUVs and minivans, and the Astra is the first compact wagon to have this function. With the rear seats down, the Sports Tourer can accommodate up to 54.7 cubic feet of haulables.

Not only is the Astra Sports Tourer quite functional, it has the makings of a vehicle that’s relatively good to drive, too. Opel has fitted its FlexRide adaptive suspension system to the wagon, with standard, tour and sport driving modes. Eight engine choices are available, ranging from 95 to 180 horsepower, including the turbocharged 1.4-liter four that’s slated for use in the U.S.-market Chevrolet Cruze.

It looks to be a fun little wagon, this Astra, and it makes us wish that there were enough buyers for such vehicles over here in the States. Have a look for yourself by either scrolling through the gallery below or watching the video (complete with Shaft-inspired soundtrack) after the jump.

Report: AFL-CIO leader calls on Detroit automaker to give back union concessions

ccdc0 gyi0060303659opt Report: AFL CIO leader calls on Detroit automaker to give back union concessions

One three-month period of profitability after years losses may be reason to cheer, but it hardly justifies going back to the old ways of doing things, right? Nonetheless, according to The Detroit News, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka this week called on General Motors, Ford and Chrysler to give back the concessions that the UAW made in the last couple of years as they companies went through bankruptcy. Trumka was speaking at the UAW’s constitutional convention in Detroit.

Members of the UAW certainly gave up a lot in terms of both present and future benefits as well as wages for new employees, but industry watchers suggest that sales are still weak the companies are hardly thriving. Further, all automakers will also have to deal with developing vehicles that meet new fuel economy and CO2 standards over the next several years. In particular, GM and Chrysler need to launch new products and continue to streamline costs in order to be viable.

It’s also unclear what, exactly, could be given back. Obviously, programs like the jobs bank are unlikely to be restored and the absence of total reform in the health care system means that restoring retiree health car programs are probably not on the table, either.

As you may have noticed, automobile sales are picking back up after their seemingly perpetual nosedive of the last two years or so. The same holds true for fullsize pickup trucks, and we’re hoping that this resurgence will bring back some of the more interesting developments that had to be shelved due to monetary constraints. Chief amongst these wishes are the unfortunately abandoned light-duty diesel engines from Dodge, Ford and General Motors.

With that in mind, our interest is piqued by a report from our friends at PickupTrucks.com suggesting that the previously shelved 4.5-liter Duramax diesel V8 engine from GM may be back on the table, except with an interesting twist. While the oil-burning powerplant was originally intended just for half ton trucks, GM is reportedly now considering offering the mill in all of its fullsize trucks, including the Heavy Duty models.

General Motors indicates that its 4.5-liter diesel V8 engine is “fully developed and ready” to launch with power ratings of over 310 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. Those figures would just about match what the larger Duramax diesels were putting out about a decade ago and seemingly be plenty for the 2500 class of trucks. What’s more, The General told our own Sam Abuelsamid that the still-running fleet of 4.5 diesels is averaging an impressive 25 miles per gallon.

Report: GM enlists Ritz-Carlton trainers to help improve Cadillac dealer service

8fe89 cadillac crest 630 Report: GM enlists Ritz Carlton trainers to help improve Cadillac dealer service

General Motors has taken its Cadillac dealer network in for service in a big way, and the company is hoping that consumers will be able to tell the difference soon. While the products in GM’s luxury portfolio have come a long way in just a few short years, customers lured in by slick ads and slicker sheetmetal have been turned off by a dealer experience that has remained largely unchanged over the decades. To fix that problem, The General recently brought together 300 salespeople for a training seminar in Chicago.

So how do you go about training workers to give customers a more gratifying sales experience? GM decided to turn to a group that knows a thing or two about hospitality – Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. – for some help. The hotel gurus suggested that dealership owners free up some cash to help rectify bad service issues. Some dealers have given sales people up to $500 in cash to help wow customers. The money can be used to provide free maintenance or extend subscriptions to OnStar or satellite radio in the event that a customer has a problem at the dealership.

The Chicago seminar is part of a nationwide training tour that GM hopes will stamp out the brand’s reputation for hit-or-miss service.

Report: Auto Czar Montgomery stepping down

3b709 ed montgomery Report: Auto Czar Montgomery stepping down

Ed Montgomery, the gentleman who helped usher General Motors and Chrysler through some of the most difficult times in both companies’ histories, has stepped down from his position as the Auto Recovery Czar for the Obama Administration. Montgomery had been at his post for just 15 months, during which time he managed to shell out an unprecedented amount of aid for two of America’s ailing auto manufacturers. The move kept the lights on, the factories humming and workers paid as both GM and Chrysler worked their ways through bankruptcy.

Montgomery was just named dean of school public policy at Georgetown University, and will likely be spending his days there instead of fretting over whether or not the American auto industry can keep its head above water. Despite things looking up for both bailed-out companies, the Obama Administration says that Montgomery’s vacant seat will be filled sooner rather than later, though no one knows who will be picked for the job. Until then, his duties will fall on the shoulders of Larry Summers, the current director of the National Economic Council.

Usually whenever we head out to a new vehicle press launch, we have to sit through exhaustive technical and marketing presentations before we get a chance to climb behind the wheel. However, General Motors put us straight into a dual-rear wheel GMC Sierra 3500 crew-cab diesel upon our arrival in Baltimore. On the docket? A 130-mile trek from Baltimore airport to Rocky Gap Lodge in the Allegheny mountains of western Maryland with Vehicle Line Executive Rick Spina sitting shotgun.

We actually appreciated this ‘backwards’ approach, because it gave us the opportunity to develop some ‘gut’ impressions of these new trucks even before we got the attendant sales pitch. For a two-hour, mostly highway jaunt, the duallie SLT proved to be a surprisingly amiable companion, but it was just the first of seven different trucks we would drive over the next couple of days. Read on past the jump find out what GM’s new heavy duty trucks are like when sampled in a range of real-world conditions.

At first glance, the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickup trucks don’t appear to have changed much compared to their 2010 counterparts. But don’t let their familiar faces fool you, because virtually all of the greasy bits have been substantially upgraded or replaced entirely. Like the competitive heavy-duty trucks from Ford and Dodge, General Motors offers its trucks in a huge array of configurations with varying passenger, payload and towing capacities and an array of gasoline and diesel engines.

We drove seven different variants over two days in the Allegheny mountains of western Maryland along with the latest models from Dodge and Ford for comparison’s sake. While the sales volume in the heavy-duty truck segment is smaller than it was at its peak a few years ago, it is still hugely profitable and comprises about 25 to 30 percent of all pickup sales. Follow the jump to learn more about what General Motors’ truck engineering team has done to help ensure those dollars keep rolling in.

Chevygate 2010 continues. By now, you’ve probably heard all about the General Motors love/hate relationship with the Chevy nickname for its bread and butter Chevrolet brand. At first, the company seemed to be turning its back on America’s pet name for the Bow Tie brand before turning around and saying that the company downright loves it when the American people use the Chevy name, but it would be using Chevrolet in all of its branding and messaging for “branding consistency.” The whole dust-up centered around The General’s attempt to build a more easily identifiable brand in emerging markets. Or something.

Now GM’s social marketing guru Joe LaMuraglia has turned out a video featuring Sales VP Alan Batey to attempt to quiet the teaming masses. You can hop the jump to see the full flick for yourself, just beware, shaky hand-cam ensues.

Batey says that Chevrolet is one of the fastest growing brands in the world, and that for every one Chevy model sold here in the U.S., the company moves two units overseas. In order to stifle any confusion as to whether or not Chevrolet and Chevy are the same brand, the company is simply going to use Chevrolet moving forward. Simple as that.

Toyota may be the brand we all associate with unintended acceleration these days, but complaints of runaway vehicles have been lodged against nearly every automaker under the sun. A Kentucky woman recently received a firsthand lesson in that fact when her 2008 Chevrolet Equinox allegedly accelerated to 90 mph for over 20 minutes. State Troopers were eventually able to help bring the SUV to a stop without incident.

According to Louisville television station WLKY, Marlene Taylor was driving with her twin daughters on I-64 when she set the cruise control for the drive home. Instead of sticking close to the speed limit, the vehicle continued to speed up until it reached 90 mph. Taylor called #911 through the vehicle’s OnStar system and was told to attempt to shift the vehicle into neutral, set the emergency brake and attempt to physically lift the accelerator pedal with her foot. According to the account, none of that worked.

Troopers eventually brought the vehicle to a stop by pulling in front of Taylor and slowing down. Attorney William McNurry now represents Taylor and says that he and his client simply want General Motors to responsibly investigate the scenario. At this time, Taylor has not filed a lawsuit. You can check out the full story and #911 call on WLKY by clicking here. Thanks for the tip, Steven!

d21f2 cadillac sixteen concept official 630 C/D: Cadillac to get new range topping rear wheel drive flagship

According to Car and Driver’s Jens Meiners, Cadillac is poised to get a new full-size, rear-wheel drive sedan to slot in above the forthcoming XTS – a model that itself will sit above the CTS when it bows to serve as a combined replacement for the STS and DTS.

To hear C/D’s moles tell it, the flagship sedan is still in the early planning stages, but the model is being built at the directive of none other than GM CEO Ed Whitacre. If the rumor is accurate, the forthcoming model is apparently likely to be derived from a stretched Sigma platform, the same architecture that underpins the CTS family. Meiners dismisses thoughts that the car could be built on the much-used Zeta platform that underpins the Chevrolet Camaro, suggesting that it’s too heavy and old to support such a vehicle.

With word that a Lambda-based three-row crossover and the BMW 3-Series fighting ATS are on the way for General Motors‘ Wreath and Crest division, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the boys down at The Tubes have hit the product accelerator pedal for their luxury brand. We just hope that this mystery offering means that Cadillac is finally going to cook up something that looks like 2003’s showstopping Sixteen concept (above), albeit likely in a scaled-down format.

Chevrolet has built a special edition of its new Spark runabout for use as a pace car during World Touring Car Championship races this year. The Spark is powered by the new 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four that will power the Cruze when it goes on sale in the United States this fall. The turbo-four produces 140 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque while standard production Sparks are powered by 1.0 or 1.2-liter engines generating 67 and 80 hp, respectively, so this figures to indeed be a significantly hotter drive. The Spark turbo will make its first WTCC appearance during the event at Zolder, Belgium on June 19-20.

Before it gets down to business, the Spark and a WTCC Cruze will be displayed with the Corvette C6.R at the kickoff of this week’s activities for the 24 hours of Le Mans. The GT2 Corvettes ran second and third in the opening qualifying session on Wednesday.

Report: Saab talking to BMW about using Mini platform for new 9-2

fa603 ursaab Report: Saab talking to BMW about using Mini platform for new 9 2

When Saab first showed the 9-X Biohybrid concept at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, it was expected to evolve into a production model based on General Motors’ compact Delta architecture which forms the foundation of the Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze. Now that Saab is owned by Spyker Cars, CEO Victor Muller is reportedly looking for a new platform partner in Munich.

According to Swedish daily Dagens Industri, Saab is negotiating with BMW about getting access to the Mini architecture for a new 9-2 model to slot in underneath the 9-3. Before the teardrop-shaped runabout can become a reality, Saab needs to successfully launch both the 9-5 sedan and the 9-4x crossover.

There is no word yet on whether Muller is said to be in exclusive talks with BMW, or if Muller and Co. are in discussions with other automakers about supplying platforms and parts for the planned supermini. For its part, news agency Reuters quotes a unnamed BMW spokesman as saying “We are in talks with several interested parties who have interest in our technology… there are no contracts with Saab at the moment.”

The 9-4x, which shares its platform with the Cadillac SRX, is expected to finally launch early next year. But for the model to be successful in Europe, it will need to have a diesel engine option, and Dagens Industri is also reporting that BMW could also provide engines options, although that could be more problematic. The 9-4x has a transverse mounted powertrain, but all of BMW’s engines are longitudinally arrayed, which would require significant re-engineering. A tip of the hat to William!

2fefb rick wagner this big getty Rick Wagoner lands a seat on <i>Washington Post</i> board

Wondering what has come of Rick Wagoner since he was jettisoned from General Motors prior to the company’s historic bankruptcy? The former Duke basketball player has stayed far away from the spotlight over the past year, but that hiatus ends effective immediately. Automotive News reports that Wagoner has accepted a spot on the board of directors of the Washington Post. Wagoner is the 11th member of the board, which also includes the extremely rich and extremely powerful Warren Buffet and Melinda Gates, wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

The Washington Post is like many other publishing empires that are struggling to keep subscribers in an increasingly digital world. The D.C. daily has fared better than many other papers, though it is reportedly exploring the sale of its once wildly popular and influential Newsweek magazine. Who knows, perhaps The Post is looking to draw from Wagoner’s experience in a struggling industry to help the paper navigate through tough times.

Report: GM’s venerable Northstar going out of production in July, replacement not yet announced

e2096 northstar v8 Report: GMs venerable Northstar going out of production in July, replacement not yet announced

It’s been a good run, Northstar, but every good thing must come to an end. Yours lasted for an impressive 17 straight years, and these days, that’s something to be proud of. Rest in peace.

According to Inside Line, a spokesperson from General Motors has confirmed that it will halt production of the Northstar engine, which first appeared in the 1993 Cadillac Allante, sometime near the end of July. According to GM, there will be enough engines available for a complete 2011 model year.

Of course, that would leave the longstanding DTS without its only available powerplant and the STS without its optional V8 starting in 2012. We contacted GM to see what might be in store for these models moving past the 2011 model year, but pretty much got a predictable “No comment.” We were assured, though, that the DTS would be around for 2011 in its current form. After that is anybody’s guess.

As General Motors’ first V8 engine with overhead camshafts, the Northstar was something of a revelation when it first hit the marketplace. But times change, and GM has a bevy of excellent cam-in-block V8s as well as direct injected V6 engines that ought to be able to fill the large hole left by the Northstar’s demise. Stay tuned for more as we hear it.

DetNews: Congressmen accuse GM of destroying documents

f29b8 gm 250 DetNews: Congressmen accuse GM of destroying documentsAccording to The Detroit News, General Motors has been asked to stop destroying electronic documents by the U.S. House Oversight Committee. Representatives Darrell Issa (R-California) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) have sent a letter to GM CEO Ed Whitacre requesting that the company to halt its policy of destroying all electronic documents after 60 days for fear that evidence pertinent to investigations concerning the company’s repayment of federal loans is being erased. In the letter, neither Issa nor Jordan point to any specific instance where theoretically deleted evidence could have been helpful in the committee’s investigations.

GM has found itself in the crosshairs of a number of queries from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, including everything from the reasoning behind the choice of certain new plant locations and a supposed secret agreement to help support new fuel-economy standards proposed by the Obama administration to the company’s ads bragging about full repayment of its government loans.

At this point, it’s difficult to tell whether this is a political witch hunt or two senators doing their best to keep an eye on GM’s activities. Either way, we can pretty much say so much for the government staying out of the carmaker’s day-to-day business.

When General MotorsCorvette Racing team hits the track at Le Mans this weekend, Chevrolet will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of a Corvette’s appearance at the 24-hour race. Before everything was packed up for the trip to La Sarthe, the celebration was initiated during the recent six hour race at Laguna Seca.

A trio of Corvette luminaries including Dick Guldstrand, Ron Fellows and Dr. Dick Thompson who drove one of the 1960 Corvettes were on hand with some of the classic racing Vettes for exhibition laps with the new GT2 C6.R and the limited edition Z06 Carbon. The new GT2 car is not in quite as strong a position this year as the GT1 has been in the past, but it should still put on a good challenge for class victory. The video is after the jump and the 24 Hours of Le Mans begins at 3:00pm CET on Saturday.

Porsche has officially put the sad trombone treatment on a challenge Mini issued to the Stuttgart-based sportscar manufacturer. As you may recall, Mini USA head honcho (and former Porsche employee) Jim McDowell called out Porsche exec Detlev Von Platen in a hilarious video made just for Facebook. While the rules of the throwdown were a little vague, we did know that the Mini crew would be rocking a Cooper S while Porsche would bring along its own 911 Carrera S at some sort of battle royale to be held at Road Atlanta.

Since McDowell threw down the gauntlet, we have heard that the competition was going to be held in the track’s paddock, not out on the actual tarmac, so who knows what Mini had up its sleeves. Either way, it doesn’t matter much now. Von Platen has responded in an open letter to McDowel saying:

While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we’ll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces.

                                      Sick. Burn.

Porsche has also pointed Mini to a particular advertisement as a reminder of the company’s intent. Click past the jump to see both the video and read the full letter for yourself.

With Porsche turning the invitation down, we have to wonder, will Mini still put on some sort of event, perhaps inviting privateers with Porsches of their own in a move not unlike General MotorsCadillac CTS-V Challenge? Over to you, Mr. McDowell.

The move may have gotten politician Darrell Issa’s undies in a bunch, but he’s wrong. General Motors moved with speed and decisiveness when a bad call blew what would have been a perfect game for Armando Galarraga, pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. It’s true that General Motors missed out on $53,000 by just handing a Chevrolet Corvette convertible over to the thwarted baseballer, but the company knew it was getting a screaming bargain in exchange for the car.

$53,000 buys a modest print run and an even more modest TV campaign. On the other hand, according to Joyce Julis & Associates, a Michigan-based firm that measures the reach of sponsorships, GM also received the equivalent of $9 million in media coverage thanks to every media outlet clamoring to cover the story. That, friends, is bounce, and when you’re in business to sell cars, it’s priceless. It’s a stunt, sure, a well-calculated one that turned out to be wildly successful. Rep. Issa doesn’t have to like it, but the people in the business of selling cars likely love the bang they got for their buck.
