GM pickups to adopt active grille louvers for fuel economy?

General Motors’ full-size pickup trucks may be next in line to get thermostatically controlled louvers behind the grille to improve aerodynamics. SRG Global, which produces a variety of components for numerous manufacturers, is developing just such a system for GM’s trucks. Similar systems will debut later this year on the Chevrolet Cruze and later on the new Ford Focus.

One of the biggest sources of aerodynamic drag and turbulence comes from the air flowing through a vehicle’s engine compartment. Closing off the grille to limit this airflow can drastically reduce this issue, however, the engine still needs air for cooling – especially at lower speeds. At higher speeds, the increased air velocity means less open area is required for adequate cooling.

Thermostatically controlled slats monitor coolant temperatures and then open or close as needed, giving the best of both worlds at the expense of a bit of added cost and complexity. That said, SRG’s new designs will integrate the slats into the grille structure reducing the cost of the system and making assembly simpler. Theoretically, such technology could also be used to improve cold-weather warm-ups by keeping the grille’s slats closed.

When Ford and Azure Dynamics unveiled the Transit Connect Electric van earlier this year, Azure announced that the electric drive systems would be installed at a facility in Michigan. Today, Azure let it be known that the installation work will be done by AM General, a company that’s best known for producing the military-spec Humvee, at its engineering and product development facility in Livonia, MI.

Ford will be shipping Transit Connect gliders (vehicles without any fuel or powertrain components installed) from its plant in Turkey to the AM General plant. Azure will ship the motors, power electronics and batteries to the plant where AM General will do the final assembly. The first units will be produced late this year with full production ramping up by April of 2011. The Transit Connect Electric will have a range of about 80 miles and be targeted at commercial customers, although Ford will apparently sell the van to any customer who wants one. Official press release available after the jump.

25 School districts now offering Autonet Wifi on school buses

b123a gmautonetmobiel 25 School districts now offering Autonet Wifi on school buses

Over two dozen school districts across the country have equipped school buses with AutoNet mobile WiFi routers allowing students to access the ‘Net on the go. The Autonet system is a basic wireless router like the ones that hundreds of millions of people use at home, but with an integrated EVDO cellular modem to keep connected on the go.

The same system has been offered as a dealer installed option by Chrysler for the last two years and General Motors recently announced that it would begin offering the units in some of its vehicles as well. The cost is relatively modest, with Chrysler charging about $500 for the unit and $30 per month for the wireless service.

Whether schools should be spending money on these types of services is debatable, but in rural districts like the Vail School District in Arizona, it could be a good way to distract students that have to ride the bus for two or more hours a day. Of course this is only helpful if the kids can actually afford a laptop or other internet-connected device.

We know firsthand that both the 2011 Ford Mustang V6 and GT aren’t just plenty quick – they’re downright scary fast compared to their predecessors. It should follow, that the king of the heap 2011 GT500 should be similarly faster than the 2010 model. Let’s just go ahead and call that one an understatement. Ford just dropped a tasty video on the interwebs showing the car lapping one of our favorite tracks – Virginia International Speedway.

Ford’s engineers had it in their minds that the new aluminum block with its 120-pound weight savings should help the car click off the 4.1-mile Grand West portion of the track about three seconds quicker than the outgoing car. Thing is, the 2011 GT500 managed to lap the track in 2:58.5 – a full nine seconds faster than last year’s version.

Progress is most definitely a good thing. Hit the jump to see the car do the dance.

General Motors has just announced the hauling capacities for the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups. The new trucks can now pull up to 21,700 pounds in fifth-wheel configuration and lug around 6,635 pounds worth of payload, thereby making them the new best-in class champions. The traditional tow rating sits at 17,000 pounds. What did GM change to give the trucks their new credentials? The company says that it extensively tested the trucks’ systems, including the engine, transmission and brakes at the new gross combined vehicle weight and found that the thing could handle the abuse.

Both the Silverado HD and the Sierra HD now come with tougher bed rails, though. GM specified a new high-strength steel that can take more of a beating compared to last year’s pieces. The new tow ratings best the next closest competitor, the 2011 Ford F-350, by 1,000 pounds on the conventional towing front and a more modest 100 pounds under fifth-wheel conditions.

How did we ever live in a world where pickup trucks couldn’t tow three Bentley Continental GT coupes and a gooseneck car trailer? Hit the jump for the press release.

Actually, the Ford Fiesta marketing campaign started well over a year ago with the Fiesta Movement social media effort. The primary advertising campaign is now moving into the more traditional print and broadcast areas as well as a new phase of the “Movement.” The first 60-second TV ad will air Tuesday night during American Idol and then spread to movie theaters to lead in the big summer blockbusters.

The more interesting aspect of the campaign will be the online webisodes that feature Fiesta Movement agents in short films. What’s not to like about zombies and key fobs to advertise a hip new car? Another webisode may be a play on last year’s Fiesta vs. Corvette comparison on Top Gear with the little Ford facing off against a Lamborghini this time.

The tag-line of the campaign will be “It’s a pretty big deal” referring to all of the features and equipment that are either standard or available in the Fiesta including the seven airbags, push-button start, heated leather seats, SYNC and especially the 40 mpg highway fuel economy. Ford is heavily promoting this as a premium small car rather than just a cheap, small car. One of the print ads features a comparison of the air bag count as compared to the BMW 3 series.

In spite of that premium feel, Ford is still promoting value although not necessarily the way they have in the past with a low-ball entry level price. Instead, the hatchback Fiesta, which starts at just over $15,700, is being pitched against the Honda Fit Sport.

With down-sizers, urban dwellers and younger buyers being the primary target market a big part of the campaign will also involve ad buys on urban and adult contemporary radio stations as cable channels like BET. Check out some of the ads and webisodes after the jump.

Next-generation Honda Civic may be delayed

5df95 00109civicopr Next generation Honda Civic may be delayed

Typically, most automakers stick to a relatively strict five-year product cycle for their highest-selling, most important products. The Honda Civic, for example, debuted in September of 2005, so realistically, a new model should be just around the corner, right? Not exactly.

In an interview with AutoWeek, American Honda executive vice president John Mendel said that changing market conditions and tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations have strongly affected the development of the next-generation Civic, meaning that the new model won’t come until sometime in 2011. AW also reports that the Civic’s redesign has been altered along the way – the new model was supposed to be larger than the current model, but now it has been redesigned to be closer in size to the current one (pictured above).

What’s more, with hot new products like the 2012 Ford Focus on deck, Honda will certainly have to up the ante on the Civic’s level of equipment, style and refinement. The Civic is still one of the world’s best-selling cars: about one million are moved each year. And with the U.S. accounting for approximately one-third of those sales, Honda would be wise to ensure that the next-generation Civic will be attractive enough to keep it in the top tier of high-selling vehicles in the States.

V6 Sports Car Comparison – Click above for high-res image gallery

This comparison test couldn’t have happened just a few short months ago. Sure, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been around since 2008. And not counting a seven-year walkabout, the Datsun/Nissan Z has been with us in one form or another since the first moon landing. Want to talk old? The Ford Mustang dates back to the invention of the wheel. At least it seems that way.

So why no comparison until now? Because until quite recently, Ford’s entry level V6-powered Mustang was never really a sports car. The heavy, near impotent Cologne iron-block V6 was a joke, fit for little more than rental car duty, and it wasn’t even terribly adept at that. But the non-V8 pony car has undergone some significant changes for 2011 – the biggest being its all-aluminum V6 producing 305 horsepower and 280 pound feet of torque – allowing it to finally hang with these two V6-powered competitors from across the Pacific.

                      At least on paper.

Read on to find out which V6-powered sports car reigns supreme. If you can’t wait, skip right to the results.

Consumer Reports‘ latest survey results are another ding for Toyota. While Honda and Ford have made gains in brand loyalty, Toyota’s brand loyalty among consumers has dipped 13 percent, causing it to fall from the top position it held at the end of 2009. Honda is in first place now, with 68 percent of Honda owners described as “likely to purchase another Honda for their next new car,” followed by Ford with 61 percent loyalty and Toyota with 57 percent.

While Toyota’s fall may be the result of negative perception in the marketplace as a result of the brand’s recall fiasco, it still made $1.2 billion in the first quarter of this year. North American sales were down but didn’t bottom out thanks to higher incentive spending, sales rose elsewhere around the world, and the company is reaping the benefit of cost savings enacted last year. A drop from a close first to a close third after more than eight million cars have been recalled isn’t so bad, and with $20 billion in cash, the company has the money, and apparently the time and mindset, to keep the ship moving.

The other two makes that CR mentions, Chevrolet and Dodge, both lost ground: Chevy dipped five percent in brand loyalty from February to April (from 57 to 52 percent), Dodge dropped four percent in the same period (from 28 to 24 percent).

The EPA has finished calculating the fuel economy of the 2011 Fiesta and as Ford projected, its new baby has hit 40 miles per gallon. The official numbers from the Feds are 29 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway for Fiestas with the new six-speed dual-clutch Powershift gearbox. Those highway numbers top the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit by four and five mpg, respectively.

Fiestas with the base five-speed manual gearbox get a rating of 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. All North American Fiestas for now are equipped with a 120 horsepower, 1.6-liter inline four regardless of which gearbox is selected. The first batches of Fiestas should be on their way to dealers in the coming weeks now that production has started.

d85a5 design panel Designers: Future transportation environment will be much more diverse

If automotive designers can agree on one thing, it’s that the future will be more diverse. Three current designers and one teacher came together to discuss the way forward at the monthly Automotive Press Association luncheon in Detroit. Cadillac’s Clay Dean, Hyundai’s Phil Zak and Ford’s Scott Strong joined Larry Erickson from the College for Creative Studies at the Detroit Athletic Club.

There will be multiple forces driving this increased diversity, including the emergence of megacities (like Paris, Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai and Singapore), changing demographics and new powertrain systems.

The increased urbanization we’re seeing in many regions is leading to larger, more crowded cities that make traditional automobiles unsuitable and unsustainable. There simply isn’t enough room for large vehicles carrying only one or two occupants on the roads of these metropolises. Dean discussed vehicles such as the General Motors EN-V concepts being shown at the Shanghai expo as one possible answer to the increasing density. Read on after the jump to hear more of what the panelists said.

Hackers tap into ECU to kill engine, brakes and more

                                ECU

During the 17 years this writer worked on braking and stability control systems, we occasionally joked about being able to remotely update the software in people’s vehicles and bring them to a halt. At that time, the technology didn’t really exist to actually do that. Today that’s no longer true. Researchers the Universities of California and Washington will present a paper at a security conference in Oakland, California next week outlining how they were able to hack into vehicle computer systems.

When electronic control units were first added to cars in the 1970s, the firmware was all in masked read-only-memory that couldn’t be modified once it fabricated. In the late 1990s, as systems became more complex, engineers began using flash memory so that firmware could be updated with bug-fixes and other changes. With most current vehicles you have to be plugged into the OBD-II diagnostic port in order to communicate with the ECUs, which are now connected over a vehicle-wide controller area network.

Now that we’re starting to move into the age of connected vehicles, the risks are rapidly increasing. OnStar already has the ability to remotely slow a stolen vehicle. Ford is currently demonstrating Fiestas that can download applications and communicate with the vehicle systems to broadcast vehicle information. Without putting adequate security into vehicle ECUs, it’s possible that someone could download a malicious application with the potential to disable or otherwise damage the vehicle.

When we first spoke of Natacha Gachnang, she was racing in the nascent Formula Two series. This year, however, she’s driving the Matech Ford GT in the FIA GT1 World Championship. Unfortunately, she was sidelined during the opening round at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit after following a crash that broke her right leg in two places. By the closing laps, the Ford was leaking brake fluid, forcing Gachnang to compensate by applying extra pedal pressure. Heading into turn 8 at the end of the straight, her foot slipped and hit the accelerator instead, sending the car into the safety barrier at around 160 miles per hour.

Gachnang was rushed to nearby Sheikh Khalifa Hospital, where she’s been recuperating from the double compound fracture, biding her time until she can put enough weight on the leg to drive again. She’s hoping for a June return, just in time for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Meanwhile, Matech’s tentatively pulled its Ford GT from the grid until it can figure out what caused the fluid leak in the first place. Gachnang’s crash at Abu Dhabi was caught on tape and is available after the jump.

New KITT up for auction along with Iron Man Cobra and The Hangover Benz

                                    KITT

Here’s our chance. If we all come together, pool our resources and work for the common good, we can buy two of the Ford Mustangs used in the filming of the thankfully-deceased Knight Rider remake. Why would we want to lay our hands on the distastefully-modified NBC creations? To kill them with fire. Think of it: a world in which the only bad Knight Rider was the original Knight Rider; a world where children are safe from thinking that KITT was anything other than the world’s most awesome self-aware Trans Am. We can do this.

The KR cars have cropped up with a handful of other, more famous TV and movie cars headed for a Mecum auction. Alongside the Knight Industries travesties, the well-moneyed out there can bid on the likes of the two unused Cobra body shells from the first Iron Man and a certain tiger-ferrying 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Convertible from The Hangover. A few other lust-worthy models are also set to stand before the gavel, including the My Name is Earl El Camino and a 2001 Buell police bike used in Terminator: Rise of the Machines.

Of course, all of those pale in comparison to our chance to right history’s wrong. We can’t do anything for Nunez’s damaged sanity at this point, but we can keep someone else from preserving these disasters for posterity. We need to hurry, though. The auction kicks off May 19 at the Indiana Fair Grounds.

We really haven’t heard too much from Bing since Microsoft cooled the jets on its advertising assault. We had thought that the supposed Google-killer had been sentenced to the same search engine purgatory as the likes of Ask Jeeves, but it turns out the big M has been busily sharpening the teeth on its Bing app. The company has just added turn-by-turn navigation to the recipe, and from what we can tell, it looks just as capable of getting you where you’re going as any of the windshield-mounted hardware out there.
