Report: Land Rover gearing up for all-new Defender

Land Rover Defender SVX

There’s something deliciously old-school about the Land Rover Defender. The product of continuous development since 1948 and produced in its current form since 1983, the Defender is to SUVs what the Porsche 911 is to sports cars: unapologetically faithful to its original form. But while the iconic Land Rover is still the very embodiment of the go-anywhere vehicle, the company is reportedly preparing to give it a complete overhaul.

Initial reports pertaining to the development of a new vehicle typically come with few details because inside sources remain tight-lipped. In this case, it appears that there are no details to be divulged simply because Land Rover hasn’t decided what they’ll be yet. At this point, according to British reports, JLR is intensively studying what is needed before it goes ahead with development – which strikes us as a smart course of action when you’re dealing with replacing a vehicle as legendary as the Defender.

All we know at this point is that the new Defender is likely to feature a highly adaptable chassis on which will be built a wide variety of body types, from convertibles to wagons to pickups. After Land Rover does finally decide on the way forward, it is expected to unveil a concept sometime in early 2013 before it can begin production in 2015.

    Petersen Museum secures $100,000,000 donation

    petersen automotive musuem

Every year, more than 150,000 folks stroll through the halls of the Petersen Automotive Museum. The crowds have been coming to the Los Angles auto-institution since 1994, when the doors were first opened. And it looks like those doors will remain open for many years to come thanks to a very large donation by Margie Petersen and the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Foundation. When we say “large” we mean it, because Mrs. Petersen just handed over $100,000,000 to the Petersen Museum Foundation.

Now, before you jump out of your seat because of all those zeros, we have to explain a bit more about that figure. This $100,000,000 donation is comprised of the 300,000 square foot building, cars that were part of Robert E. Petersen’s personal collection, an undisclosed influx of cash (described as a “substantial unrestricted financial gift”) and a “matching challenge.”

We wanted to find out a little more with regards to just how this $100 million donation breaks down. A quick call to Buddy Pepp, Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Musuem, helped shed some light on the matter. While Mr. Pepp could not disclose the exact amount of the cash gift they’re receiving, he did say that value is “enormous.” He went on to state that it’s “breathtaking” and will “enable us to do all the things we’ve wanted or need to do. It will catapult us to a world-renowned status. This donation will allow us to fulfill Bob Petersen’s vision.” Not only that, the “matching challenge” will make sure that the directing board keeps pushing to help the museum continue to grow.

We were hoping to get to the juicy details, and hear an exact figure, but it’s good to know that the Petersen Museum is going to allow people of all ages to get a glimpse of automobiles from all eras. In fact, the total number of vehicles being donated from Petersen’s private stock is 135, and that includes a handful of motorcycles as well. It’s an incredibly generous gift from a couple that already give to many other groups and charities.

Video: San Francisco garage is a hidden gem

      Unique hidden garage door
San Francisco hidden garage – Click above to view video after the jump

The only thing separating this urban San Francisco garage from true brilliance might be the gaudy “No Parking” sign plastered to it. While the sign is definitely useful for keeping pesky commuters from parking in front of your well-disguised garage, it kills just a little of the structure’s mystique.

That said, the garage door/facade arrangement’s double-hinge operation is nothing short of masterful, and we shudder to think how much time, money and blood sweat and tears the setup took to pull off. Once the door has swung out of the way, it reveals a surprisingly large amount of space, for any number of automotive shenanigans, without the threat of passerby getting a peak at your toys.

For privacy, a drool-worthy D.I.Y. ethic, and not scarring the street with another ugly garage door, this workspace is is right up there near the top of the heap. True, its practical purposes may be somewhat limited, but to those who appreciate this kind of engineering, that should be of little concern. See the garage in action after the jump. Thanks to all for the tips!

Audi R18 TDI debuts in full race livery for ahead of Le Mans

The domination of racing teams and the factories that support them wax and wane across countless motorsports disciplines around the world from year to year. But arguably none has continued to dominate like Audi at Le Mans. Since the turn of the millennium, Audi has won the iconic French endurance race every year but two: In 2003 when its own sister company Bentley took top honors, and in 2009, when its chief rival, Peugeot took the win.

Audi has introduced a succession of sports prototype racers to uphold its honor, from the original R8 through the R10 TDI and the R15 TDI that won last year. The latest is the closed-cockpit R18 TDI, which the German automaker has yet to field in an actual race but which has now undergone its first test sessions in the full battle livery you see here.

The trio of silver and black racers will again be differentiated by the red, yellow and black highlights, and feature a number of body parts crafted from carbon fiber, giving the R18 TDI a lightweight form on which Audi is banking to fend off Peugeot, which started off the season strong by defeating the outgoing R15 at Sebring.

Will the new R18 prove capable of shutting out its French rivals for the title event at Le Mans this coming June? We’ll have to wait and see, but with the preliminary test sessions at the Circuit de la Sarthe reinstituted this past weekend after a two-year absence, the Audis were on top of the time sheets, the Peugeots only narrowly beating out the third of them. Follow the jump for press releases from the Paul Ricard and La Sarthe test sessions and take a closer look in the high-resolution image gallery below.

Lexus boss Templin says brand to lose luxury sales crown over Japan quake

mark templin lexus vp Lexus has been the king of luxury car sales in the U.S. for over a decade, but Toyota’s high-end brand will likely lose its crown in 2011, due at least in part to the March 11 earthquake in Japan.

Certainly, Lexus was already facing a great deal of pressure from rivals like BMW and Buick, but Automotive News reports that Toyota VP and Lexus Group Manager Mark Templin says dealers are down to a 30-day supply of most models, and that vehicle shortages will be felt as early as this week. The problem is that some key components from Japan come from plants that are still shut down as a result of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The Lexus CT 200h is reportedly close to sold out due to the issues.

Further complicating matters is the fact that Lexus ramped up the leasing business three years ago, and those customers will soon be bringing back their luxury rides in large numbers. That’s good news for dealers looking for products to sell, but it’s bad for customers who may not have the ability to purchase a new Lexus model.

The automaker is looking to ease this issue by offering six-month lease extensions. At the same time, Templin knows many customers will simply purchase their lease vehicle outright, and he’s asking dealers not to gouge those customers. The fear is that a shortage of models will result in more demand than supply, which could then jack up the price of Lexus models to unreasonable levels.

Since the automaker appears to be out of the running for the 2011 luxury sales crown, it seems natural that Lexus will come back with a vengeance in 2012. But Templin says the automaker may never again grab the sales crown, since luxury car makers are aiming down-market to improve corporate fuel economy averages. Templin opines that it won’t be long before a luxury car maker hits 500,000 sales in a year.

Online Find of the Day: BaT bags a pair of Lancia Delta Integrale specials

                Lancia Delta Integrale special editions

Lancia Delta Integrale special editions – Click above for a high-res image gallery

It’s rare enough to find one Lancia Delta Integrale for sale in North America. It’s rarer still to find an example of one of the special edition cars Lancia made over the last two years of the Delta Integrale’s life cycle. This week, though, Bring a Trailer is featuring two such cars from one Canadian seller.

The first car is one of 400 1992 Lancia Delta Integrale Martini 5 Special Editions, built to commemorate Lancia’s fifth World Rally Championship. The Martini 5 also marked the first run of special edition Integrales. According to the seller, this one has been upgraded with Martini 6 decals, 17-inch Speedline wheels and a catalytic converter-less Group B exhaust system.

Inside, there’s an aftermarket OMP steering wheel, Alcantara trim and a pair of delicious Recaro buckets. The seller says he still has the original wheels if the 17s are a bit much. Though the car is apparently street legal in Canada, it will need a catalytic converter if it’s going to pass a smog test in Vancouver. Those of us in the States will have to make do with a show and display exception, or wait until the car is 25 years old before it can be registered.

The second car is one of 250 1994 Lancia Delta Integrale Edizione Finale cars made specifically for the Japanese market. Like all Edizione Finales, this example wears Rosso Amarento paint, and carries a laundry list of the Delta’s most desirable options. That means a set of anthracite gray 16-inch Speedline wheels, push-button start, carbon fiber trim, aluminum pedals, a passenger footrest and the same Recaro furniture that graces the Martini Delta. On top of all that, the Edizione Finale received a bump to 250 horsepower, thanks to revised engine management.

Both cars are available exclusively through BaT, though we doubt they’ll be sticking around too long given their rarity and desirability. Unfortunately for us, they’re priced accordingly. The 1992 Martini 5 car is listed at a heady $80,000, while the 1994 Edizione Finale is “just” $65,000. Head over to Bring A Trailer for more.

We’ve taken a couple crazy cab rides in our lifetime, but we’ve never paid up for a ride that took us from New York to Los Angeles. John Belitsky and his buddy Dan Wuebben have done the deed, though, with cabbie Mohammed Alam providing the yellow Ford Escape taxi. The cost? $5,000. The media attention from paying a cabbie five grand to take you cross country? Priceless.

If you’re thinking that this sounds like the script to a movie, Belitsky is probably thinking the same thing. CNN reports that the investment banker and son of a cab driver is heading to Hollywood to pitch the story as a movie idea, adding “we’re going to take it to some movie people when we get there and see what happens.”

We’re all for a good (and we stress “good“) road trip movie, but we’re more impressed with the fact that Belitsky was able to convince a cab driver to take the fare in the first place. The traveling pair reportedly asked more than a few cabbies if they were up for the journey, but only Alam was interested in risking the hefty fare. But even at $5,000, Belitsky got off easy on the trip. We’re guessing the trip would have cost at least three times as much if the meter were actually running, and the cab driver still had to get his Escape all the way back to the Big Apple.

Report: Volkswagen wants to bring three-row CUV, subcompact to U.S.

jonathan browning, vwVolkswagen is working hard to make sure it accomplishes its North American assimilation plan. In order to fully realize its ambitious 800,000-unit volume target, the automaker will be required to introduce an even greater variety of vehicles into its existing lineup. Jonathan Browning, CEO of Volkswagen North America, says that he and his team understand this, and a few new VW family members could wind up in U.S. dealer showrooms.

According to Car and Driver, Volkswagen believes that an additional crossover is needed to help round-out the lineup. This vehicle would need three-rows of passenger seating, and its crosshairs would target the likes of Ford’s Explorer and the Honda Pilot. For whatever it’s worth, the scuttlebutt we’ve heard is that VW is considering a stretched Tiguan to fill this duty, as a three-row Touareg would be too costly for the family-oriented segment.

Volkswagen could also be looking to go small. Though its current European-market Polo seems like an easy solution, VW believes that’s not the case. The car is not ready for U.S. consumption, and it would require a bit of “Americanizing” before VW will sell you one.

We love the Polo and are looking forward to whatever form in which it arrives, but we’d love to see us some Scirocco and Amarok, too.

Report: BMW won’t market an M3 GTS sedan… at least, not in the U.S.

You may recall that earlier this month, BMW revealed a unique M3 Sedan that had been stripped of weight and toughened up, packing the same sort of approach applied to the hard-core M3 GTS coupe, albeit with a couple of extra doors. The one-off was made for the M Festival set to take place during the 24 Hours of Nürburgring this coming June, but naturally, speculation on its production potential has ensued.

The good folks over at M3Post pinned down Matt Russell, the guy who handles the M range (along with Alpina) for BMW North America, and asked him about the lightweight M3 sedan’s future, and according to him, there are no plans to market such a vehicle in the United States. Naturally, Russell didn’t comment on markets outside his purview, neatly avoiding comment on whether the hardcore sedan will be available somewhere. But given the short time remaining in the current M3’s lifespan and the stringencies of U.S. regulations, any such vehicle apparently isn’t fated for these shores.

Elsewhere in the interview, Russell professed his admiration for the all-wheel drive system developed by Ferrari for the new FF. Could BMW incorporate AWD into future M products? Potentially, but as with the lightweight M3 sedan, the extra heft would be an issue.

Toyota has announced that it is voluntarily recalling 51,000 2011 Tundra pickup trucks. The automaker says that .05 percent of the vehicles may have been built with a faulty slip yoke on the driveshaft. Due to improper manufacturing during the foundry process, the yoke could break. So far, the incident has only occurred in one customer-owned vehicle and no accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the defect. Toyota says that owners will begin receiving recall notices next month and that dealers will inspect the vehicles’ driveshafts to determine if they are part of the defective production lot.

Though the inspection is expected to take no more than 10 minutes, if needed, actual replacement will take longer, but both inspection and replacement of the faulty parts will come at no cost to owners. No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles have been impacted by the problem. Hit the jump for Toyota’s official press release.

Imagine a Cadillac and you’re about as likely to conjure up images of big, rear-drive landyachts of yesteryear as you are to picture the automaker’s considerably tauter products of today. But Cadillac has long been rumored to be pondering a return to its classic formula with a new flagship sedan, and those rumors are rounding the mill once again.

This time, word has it that Cadillac is developing a new rear-drive luxury sedan to slot in above the upcoming front-drive XTS in pursuit of territory currently dominated by the likes of the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and Lexus LS. If and when it does materialize, sources place its launch around 2014. Power would more likely come in the form of a V8 than the 13.6-liter V-16 engine of the 2003 Cadillac Sixteen concept pictured above (though that would no doubt be incredibly awesome), but a hybrid variant could follow.

The new model would be built on a new platform reportedly dubbed ‘Omega’, but while the architecture would be developed uniquely for the big sedan, a further extension is being muted as a possibility to take on the likes of the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Bentley Mulsanne and the Maybach. Far-fetched? Probably. But intriguing nonetheless.

The engineers and designers at Ford are hard at work on the next take for one of its largest crossovers. Our spy photographers have managed to snap a few photos of the 2013 Ford Flex ahead of its debut later this year, and from the looks of things, the vehicle will borrow more than a few styling cues from its platform-mate, the 2011 Explorer. Expect to see a more corporate face, complete with a new grille, angular headlights and a revised front fascia among other tweaks. Projector fog lights seem to have made their way to the option sheet for the first time and new wheels should also be available.

Out back, the 2013 Flex looks like it will make use of a restyled tail gate as well. So far, it’s unclear exactly what sort of interior upgrades the three-row CUV will receive, though we’d feel comfortable in guessing that MyFord Touch will likely make an appearance in the cabin for the first time. In addition, Ford may pull some fuel economy tricks from the ether as well.

Motor Trend has amassed three of the automotive world’s black sheep for a little throw-down on the quarter mile. The 2011 Porsche Panamera Turbo lurks in one corner, complete with its 550-horsepower, forced-induction 4.8-liter V8. What could possibly serve as a fitting combatant to such a lump of angry metal? The 2011 BMW X6 M is up to the challenge. With a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that kicks out 555 500 horsepower, the gangly SUV should have the cajones to give the bad Porsche a run for its schnitzel.

Of course, where’s the fun in watching two German heavyweights go around the ring? In order to add a little spice to this mix, the guys from MT threw in the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon. Now it’s a party.

How does it turn out? We won’t spoil it for you. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself. If you look really closely, you might even see a familiar face that used to haunt these halls. Word has it that we can expect a more mouth-watering video with these three amigos to show up later this week.

It is time for enthusiasts to embrace hybrid powertrain technology. A few short years ago, the mention of “hybrid power” conjured up images of low displacement engines, tiny electric boost motors and lethargic performance. Sure, the vehicles were environmentally-friendly (on a local level, at least) and they spanked their pure-combustion counterparts when it came to fueling stops, but they were also absolutely boring to drive. No, make that numbing.

Of course, there are always a few exceptions to the rule. Vehicles including the Lexus LS 600h L, Lexus GS 450h, BMW ActiveHybrid 750i and BMW ActiveHybrid X6 deliver spirited performance, but only mediocre improvements over their gas-only siblings when it comes to efficiency. And, we don’t need to remind you that these vehicles are always very complex, excessively heavy and hardly inexpensive – there were simply few compelling reasons to put one in the garage.

Infiniti, a brand in itself almost embarrassing late to the hybrid game, seems to be in a position to change all that.

It looks like Fiat and Jeep have been busy working on the American manufacturer’s upcoming compact CUV. Our tactical squad of spy photographers managed to capture a few images of a Fiat Qubo test mule running around in upper latitudes of Sweden. Apparently the baby widebody tester is our first glimpse at the small Jeep CUV set to debut in 2013. The machine will use a host of bits and pieces sourced from the Fiat parts bin, including a range of Italian powerplants like the company’s 1.4-liter Multiair gasoline engine. In addition, 1.3-liter and 1.6-liter diesel mills will also be available. Power gets shipped to the front wheels, though an all-wheel-drive option should also be available.

Aesthetically, odds are the production version won’t share too many lines with the mule you see above. The Fiat/Jeep team is likely using the Qubo chassis to put the drivetrain through its paces. Jeep CEO Mike Manley has made it clear that the newest addition to his company’s stable will feature the same round headlights and vertical grille as the rest of the line, and we’d expect similarly masculine bodywork as well.

Call the BMW X1 what you like. A hatchback with an identity crisis. A BMW crossover with a Napoleon complex. But whatever you call it, you can’t argue with its success. Since going on sale less than two years ago in Europe, the smallest of Munich’s X Series has sold out in just about every market it’s reached. Which is why it’s not here in America yet – the Bavarian automaker just can’t keep up with demand, and taking a bite out of the U.S. market is more than it can chew at the moment.

That won’t stop the X1 from reaching our neighbors to the north, though. A BMW dealership in the affluent Toronto suburb of Thornhill has announced that the X1 is coming to that vast frozen landmass above the 49th Parallel, verified by the inclusion of the CUV’s presence on the BMW Canada website, but not on BMW USA’s.

It won’t be the first time the Canucks are getting an import before America does – the Mercedes-Benz B-Class stands as another notable German example – but could this prove a precursor to the crossover’s arrival in the United States? We’ll just have to sit tight and see – either that or defect northwards.

Introducing a new vehicle every year is perfectly normal for a Formula 1 team like McLaren, which brings a new grand prix racer to the grid for every championship. Less so for an automaker that offers only one model range, but according to reports, McLaren Automotive plans to bring a new product to market each year moving forward.

Following up on past offerings like the legendary McLaren F1 and the SLR jointly developed with Mercedes-Benz, the new MP4-12C is the first offering from the new McLaren Automotive. But it won’t be the last. It’s already introduced a GT3 racing variant of the MP4, and is reportedly in the process of developing a roadster variant, as well. Beyond that, reports have linked McLaren with a 911-fighter to slot in below the MP4, and a stratospheric hyper-car to slot in above. With three core ranges in store, that could give McLaren enough space to launch variants of each for years to come.

While the key to its meeting ever-restricting environmental regulations rests in its lightweight construction, the British racing-team-turned-automaker is also said to be working on bringing battery-assisted propulsion – similar, we’d suspect, to the KERS regenerative braking system found in its latest Formula 1 racers – to the street, reportedly already managing to extract a single horsepower out of a lithium-ion fuel cell no larger than a AA battery.

Ford earns $2.6B in first quarter, most since 1998

Ford announced its most rewarding first quarter since 1998, with $2.6 billion in earnings on global sales of $33.1 billion. The earnings are up 22 percent versus the first quarter of 2010, while sales increased by $5 billion for the quarter. This large increase in sales was the biggest driver for the overall profit, as the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker moved 1.4 million units in Q1 2011, up 16 percent versus Q1 2010.

Most of Ford’s profit came from moving vehicles here in North America, where $1.8 billion in total earnings were bolstered by improved sales and lower incentive spending. Ford also managed to eek out a $293 million profit in Europe, which posted a loss in the fourth quarter of, 2010. In all, Ford managed $2.8 billion in operating profit, and $2.1 billion of that money came from automotive operations. Ford Credit earned $713 million on the quarter.

Further good news comes on the debt front, as Ford managed to pay down its debt by $2.5 billion during Q1 while also increasing liquidity by $2.8 billion. That means Ford has a much larger cushion in the event the industry’s economic situation once again takes a turn for the worse, while also paying less money in interest. Ford eliminated $1 billion in annual interest costs in 2010.

Ford’s outstanding quarter took analysts by surprise, as the projections of a 50 cents-per-share profit was demolished by a 61 cents-per-share reality. As a result, Ford shares are up four percent in early Tuesday trading. Hit the jump to read Ford’s official statement.
