2012 Chevrolet Malibu teased ahead of Shanghai debut [w/video]

2012 Chevrolet Malibu teaser

2012 Chevrolet Malibu teaser – Click above for high-res image

The 2012 Chevrolet Malibu will officially be revealed at the Shanghai Motor Show on April 19, and General Motors has released this official teaser shot of its new ‘Bu, showing off its new Camaro-inspired LED taillamps. GM will also be bringing the Malibu to the New York Auto Show, which officially starts on April 20, where we’ll get our first glimpse of the new Chevrolet family sedan in the flesh.

We’ve seen quite a few spy shots of the new Malibu, and we know that it will ride on GM’s smaller Epsilon II platform that currently underpins the Buick Regal. Still, GM tells us that the new Malibu will be wider than the model it replaces, and we can expect a more rakish exterior design. The Malibu will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six different continents, and thus, a global design that would appeal to all markets is necessary in order for it to be a success.

Expect the Malibu to only be available with four-cylinder engines, including GM’s naturally aspirated 2.4-liter Ecotec four and its turbocharged 2.0-liter powerplant. Rumor has it that a hybrid version is also in the works, as is an all-wheel-drive model.

You can watch the official Chevrolet Malibu reveal on the automaker’s Facebook page on Monday, April 18 at 8:30 PM EST – right when the sheets are pulled back in Shanghai. For the full details, hit the jump for GM’s official press release, as well as a short video detailing some of the Malibu’s overall design elements.

Audi celebrates birth of five-millionth A4

Audi A4 number 5 million rolls off the line

We can’t help but like the Audi A4. It’s roomy for its class, it’s very efficient and it certainly helps that the high-volume Audi is entertaining to drive. It’s no wonder, then, that the four-ringed automaker has managed to make its five-millionth A4 at its plant in Ingolstadt, a 2.0 TFSI Quattro variant in Misano Red. The A4’s success story is aided by the fact that the model comes as a wagon or sedan, plus available Quattro all-wheel-drive, an S variant and a CUV-ish Allroad model that isn’t sold in the States.

Frank Dreves, Member of the Board of Management at Audi, calls A4 number five million “another major milestone in Audi’s history. All versions of the A4 are efficient, elegant and enjoy outstanding success in their class.” Hit the jump to read over the brag-filled press release.

Toyota Avensis touring car debuts ahead of BTCC season opener

      Toyota Avensis BTCC

Toyota Avensis BTCC – Click above for high-res image gallery

Touring car racing is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance as of late. DTM is growing from a German national series to a proper international championship, while the World Touring Car Championship is living up to its name by expanding outside Europe. V8 Supercars are as popular as ever Down Under, just as Super GT is in Japan. But arguably the most resurgent is the British Touring Car Championship.

Title-sponsored by Dunlop, this year’s BTCC will feature no fewer than 27 competitors – and all-time high for the series – fielding 13 different models from 10 manufacturers, representing Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Proton, Seat, Toyota, Vauxhall and Volkswagen. That could very well be higher and more varied participation than any other major racing series in the world.

When the BTCC launched its Next Generation Touring Car formula, it was Toyota’s British subsidiary that kicked it off with the new Avensis racer, which has finally made its public debut at Silverstone – a little behind schedule, but still a week before the series gets under way at Brands Hatch. The car will be campaigned by Dynojet Racing and Speedworks, with Frank Wrathall, Jr. and Tony Hughes behind the wheel of each, respectively. The cars are built atop frames rolling right off the assembly line at Toyota’s Burnaston plant, and powered by a turbochagred 2.0-liter four with over 300 horsepower. Check out the full press blast after the jump for more.

eBay Find of the Day: World’s best Datsun 240Z resto-mod?

eBay find of the day: 1972 datsun 240z resto-mod

eBay Find of the Day: 1972 Datsun 240Z resto-mod – Click above for high-res image gallery

The Datsun 240Z is a pantheon vehicle. By that we mean it belongs on many a car enthusiasts’ all-time great vehicle lists. If you’re in the market, there are plenty of options on eBay that will help you put one in your driveway. One Datsun in particular has caught our eye due to the quality of its execution. How much would it cost to own the beautiful S30 shown above? If you wanted to Buy It Now, you’d better have $85,000 burning a hole in your pocket.

That’s right, we said $85,000, and that figure is reduced from an ambitious previous asking price of $125,000. What could cause someone to think their Z is worth that much? A complete frame-off restoration and a parts list that makes us think the owner is capable of Inception, since it reads like something from our modified car dreams.

Under the hood sits a SR20DET, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine taken from a 2002 Nissan Silvia. The suspension and brakes have been upgraded with Arizona Z car and Wilwood components. Basically, anything that could’ve been upgraded has been taken care of.

Still, you’d be hard-pressed to find a 240Z buyer looking to plunk down that many Benjamins for a car. There’s no doubt that leading Japanese classics are climbing in price, and this car might be snatched up quickly at half the asking price. Head over to eBay Motors for the full listing. Thanks for the tip, Sid!

Fisker to use lighter dedicated range-extending engines in future, possibly three-cylinder

          2012 Fisker Karma

2012 Fisker Karma – Click above for high-res image gallery

A very recent conversation with people who would know of such things revealed that Fisker Automotive firmly intends to use a lighter weight dedicated three- or four-cylinder inline engine in the next generation of Fisker cars after the range of Karma variants and Delaware-built Project Nina models have all been launched.

So, rather than the 255-horsepower four-cylinder “LNF” 2.0-liter turbocharged GM Ecotec engine in the current Karma that weighs around 360 pounds, next-gen Fiskers will carry instead 200- to 250-pound turbocharged three-cylinder engines to create more than adequate energy to feed the lithium-ion battery pack.

One clear candidate drawing a lot of client attention is the Lotus Engineering 1.2-liter three-cylinder range-extending engine to be produced in Spain with Fagor Ederlan Group. The chief advantage to a dedicated extender engine is the lower weight versus a normal series four-cylinder pulled from the parts bin. This lightening will automatically add range to any electric vehicle.

GPS data gives us the Top 20 Worst Commutes

            Traffic jam

Being stuck in traffic anywhere sucks. Even if it’s just for a few minutes, feelings of urgency and anger sneak in quickly. Now, imagine being stuck in traffic multiple hours a day, five days a week. For some people, it’s a way of life. To figure out who has the worst commute in the nation, the Daily Beast studied and quantified the Top 20 Worst Commutes in America.

Factors that went into the list included length of the traffic corridor, longest rush hour travel time along that stretch of road and the time it takes to drive a mile along that stretch during the highest-volume rush hour. They also calculated how much worse a stretch of road is during its worst rush-hour period versus normal driving. California’s Delta Highway/CA-4 took that honor handily, taking 318 percent longer to travel during rush times.

The data was gathered from GPS and smartphone tracking of four million vehicles by a company called INRIX, which the Daily Beast compiled into the top 20 list. Now, without further ado, the top 20 worst commutes in the nation:

            1. Riverside Freeway/Calif. Highway 91 eastbound, Los Angeles

Video: 2012 Ford Focus ST is still our orange crush

              2012 Ford Focus ST

2012 Ford Focus ST hits the road – Click above to watch the video after the jump

We haven’t heard much about the 2012 Ford Focus ST lately, but never fear, it’s still destined for our shores. After all, it would be downright cruel for Ford to not offer the hottest variant of its new global Focus here in the States, especially when we’ve been denied all of the Euro-spec hot hatch fun for so long.

To recap, the Focus ST uses FoMoCo’s 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-four, good for 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox to send that power to the ground, and though the car is fitted with front-wheel drive, the automaker’s torque-vectoring power control system is on hand to keep things from getting too squirrely. Inside, there are Recaro sport seats, orange trim and a thick steering wheel that we can’t wait to get our hands on.

Until the Focus ST officially hits the road, we’ll have to satisfy our craving for Blue Oval hot hatchery with this video, which you can view after the break. It’s certainly not the most exciting piece of film ever published on the Interwebs, but it’s enough to make us fall in love with the ST all over again.

                S-Specialized + McLaren Venge bicycle

If you were going to ride a bicycle designed by a British automaker, who would you want to build it – Land Rover or McLaren? If it were a mountain bike, maybe Land Rover. But for a racing bike like this one, we’ll go with McLaren.

Shortly after the debut of the Range Rover Evoque road bike comes this very slick racing bike, designed and fabricated collaboratively by McLaren and Specialized. The latter, as you might have guessed, contributed the basic bicycle-building know-how, while McLaren Applied Technologies brought the expertise in lightweight materials garnered from winning 169 grands prix, 12 drivers’ Championships and eight Constructors’ titles over the course of its years in Formula One. The result is a frame that weighs just 2.09 lbs – some 10-15 percent lighter than other carbon-fiber bike frames, achieved through a new way of cutting the fiber sheets.

The S-Specialized + McLaren Venge made its debut at the classic Milan-San Remo race this past weekend, where 2009 Tour de France winner Mark Cavendish rode it to finish a respectable 52nd out of the 156 cyclists who actually completed the race. Follow the jump, if you’re so inclined, to watch video footage of one of McLaren’s engineers geeking out on how the Venge was developed, or just skip straight to the high-resolution images in the gallery below.

Hot on the heels of Audi’s announcement to use T-Mobile for its future wireless data needs, Ford has partnered with AT&T to provide connectivity to the 2012 Focus Electric.

Nearly every EV or plug-in hybrid coming to market will offer some combination of embedded wireless data and an accompanying smartphone app, and as we saw at CES with our exclusive hands-on of MyFord Mobile, FoMoCo will be offering a similar solution for its all-electric Focus hatchback.

The partnership Ma Bell and the Blue Oval involves an embedded wireless connection in the EV that allows drivers with the MyFord Mobile app to keep track of charging, set specific times of the day to juice up (late at night when electrons are cheap) and receive a variety of notifications, ranging from battery status to maintenance reminders.

MapQuest has been tapped to provide charging station locations, range alerts, trip planning and vehicle location, and the MyFord Mobile app also includes the ability to remotely lock and unlocks doors, heat and cool the interior and download performance and system data. And if your phone doesn’t have the app, you can use any HTML5-based or WAP 2.0-supported browser to keep tabs on your EV. Hit the jump for the full details and check out our write-up on MyFord Mobile.

Report: Hyundai may be piling on the sales, but dealers aren’t piling on the profits

Hyundai is holding a hot hand with its current lineup. Sales are climbing and perception of the brand is swinging strongly in the right direction. Not everyone is singing just yet, however, because Hyundai dealers are apparently lagging behind the competition in one very important area: profits.

In 2010, the industry-wide average dealer profit was 2.1 percent of total sales. Hyundai has seen its average dealer profit rise over the last few years, but according to Automotive News, it’s still below industry average; last year, Hyundai dealers earned 1.9 percent. On the flip-side, Honda dealers enjoy an average profit of nearly three percent of total sales.

One area where dealers see hefty profits is from the service bays and parts sales. Ford and Chevrolet dealerships might see 85 percent of their overhead costs taken care of by the service department. A typical Hyundai dealer may earn enough to handle 40 percent.

Hyundai dealers also have to contend with shortages of their popular models and weak used-car sales. Yet as more folks buy Hyundai vehicles, the dealers will increase the speed at which they catch up with the competition. More vehicles on the road will lead to a rise in trips to the service bay and parts sold. More used current-generation vehicles will help turn around used-car sales. Hyundai dealers know this, and 85 percent of the nearly 800-strong network is operating in the black.

Brabus does bonkers. So when it decided to cook up the latest iteration of its rolling ode to executive connectivity, it went all out – both under the hood and inside the leather-clad cabin – so lets work from the inside out.

The conversion of the rather staid Mercedes-Benz S-Class into the Brabus “iBusiness 2.0″ begins in the boot, with a Mac Mini mounted in a leather-lined tray inside the trunk. The Mac connects up with a 15.2-inch TFT, 16:9 aspect ratio display that mechanically unfolds from the alcantara-coated headliner and can also be used as an auxiliary display for the – not one, but two – iPad 2s mounted in the electronically deployed and adjustable custom tables mounted behind the two front seats. The tables secure both the tablets and a Apple Bluetooth keyboard, and allow the Russian mobster in back to chat with his Swedish princess over Apple’s Facetime video conferencing system.

4131b 05 brabus ibusiness 20 250op At 219 mph, the Brabus iBusiness 2.0 is the worlds fastest Apple obsessed officeNaturally, all this tech isn’t any good without solid connectivity, and to that end, Brabus has fitted the S with a WiFi network comprised of UMTS and HDSPA networking to wireless wire everything together. More impressive, the German tuner developed a custom app for the iPads that allows backseat passengers to control every aspect of Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system. Jeeves will not be pleased…

When it’s time to crank up the tunes, a 64-gig Apple iPod Touch is mounted in the rear center console and sends music to either the standard S-Class sound system or a pair of Sennheiser Noise Gard headphones, which can also be used to plumb in one of a few hundred channels provided by the wireless DVBT television receiver.

And naturally, since this is Brabus, the package wouldn’t be complete without a serious dose of pavement-pummeling power. The Brabus 800 iBusiness 2.0 lives up to its name with 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque pulled from the twin-turbocharged V12, shuttling the S to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 219 mph. If you’re less interested in the power and more enthralled by the tech, Brabus is offering the complete iBusiness 2.0 package for any S-Class – from the lowly S 350 to the aforementioned S 65 – but if you take your life on the road seriously, why opt for anything less? Full details in the press blast after the break.

NHTSA issues new child seat guidelines

                        NHTSA child car seat guidlines

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
released new guidelines today to help parents decide on a safety seat for their child and the best use of that seat. According to the new guidelines, kids should stay in rear-facing child seats until they’re two years old, or have reached the height and weight limits advised by the seat’s manufacturer.

Whether kids are kept in a rear- or forward-facing seat, NHTSA says it is important children always ride in the back. If the back seat is unavailable, passenger air bags should be turned off when car seats are in front of them.

After kids reach two, NHTSA recommends leaving them in a child or booster seat appropriate for their weight and height until they properly fit in an adult seatbelt. Further, NHTSA recommends keeping kids in the back seat at all times until they hit those magical teen years.

How government safety standards for car seats fail large children

ce97c crashtestfamily How government safety standards for car seats fail large children

Every parent worth their salt does his or her best to keep their children safe. Car seats are a big part of that equation, and snapping our little cherubs into a five-point harness makes us feel like we’ve done our very best to care for our precious offspring. But are we really?

If you assume there’s strict federal federal standards for child safety and booster seats to conform to, you might be surprised at just how little oversight there actually is. In fact, kids weighing more than 65 pounds – which means younger and younger kids as childhood obesity rates ratchet up – sit on boosters with no government safety standards. Seats for younger young’uns are only held to a front-end collision standard. The physics of a car crash act in different ways on the bodies of children than they do on their full-grown counterparts – kids are not simply scaled-down adults.

According to The Washington Post, part of the problem is that a crash-test dummy that mimics a child’s physiology is far behind schedule. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was supposed to have a dummy ready by 2004 to simulate a 10-year-old, as part of Anton’s Law, a bit of legislation that went into effect in 2002. That dummy is still not right, and that leaves child seat manufacturers to self-regulate their products and to recall reactively when problems crop up, instead of conforming to guidelines that protect all children in front, side, rear-end and rollover accidents.

Porsche makes 911 GT3 R Hybrid v2.0 lighter, more efficient

Porsche has pulled back the curtain on the second version of its 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car. The German automaker has managed to reduce the electrified racer’s weight by 20 percent, mostly by toying with the hybrid drivetrain.

Two electric motors mated to a portal axle spin the front wheels with up to 200 horsepower for a few seconds at a time. That’s in addition to the 470 horsepower on tap from the flat six-cylinder internal combustion engine mounted out back. Thanks to data collected during the previous generation 911 GT3 R Hybrid’s time on track, which was extensive, engineers were also able to reconfigure the vehicle’s high-voltage components.

79986 01gt3rhybridnr24h2010 opt Porsche makes 911 GT3 R Hybrid v2.0 lighter, more efficientDoing so allowed for the deletion of those massive air intakes on the rear fenders of the old body (right, at last year’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring). The new skin is significantly more aerodynamic and helps deliver increased fuel economy as a result. The 911 GT3 R Hybrid still uses an electric flywheel accumulator, though it and the rest of the hybrid kit is now stored in a carbon-fiber safety cell on the passenger side of the cabin.

Porsche plans to campaign the 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 at various race events throughout the year, just like it did with the first car, starting with the Nürburgring 24 in June. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Rumormill: 2013 Shelby GT500 to boast over 600 horsepower

                                Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The golden age of horsepower ended a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, right? Well, no. In reality, it seems that every new model year brings more and more ponies from the likes of the reborn Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger along with the stalwart Ford Mustang.

According to the internet rumormill, that pattern isn’t going to change any time soon. Car and Driver reports that the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will boast as much as 620 horsepower. Naturally, the powerplant providing all those ponies will be a supercharged V8, in this case bored out to displace 5.8 liters instead of the 5.4 we’ve been seeing for the last several years.

Car and Driver’s math tells us, assuming the power and weight estimates are in the ballpark, to expect a scorching 12.0-second quarter mile time from the 2013 GT500, a top speed that could be as high as 190 miles per hour and a sticker price of roughly $60,000.

For what it’s worth, Chevrolet is estimating that the supercharged and intercooled 6.2-liter LSA V8 engine that will power its Camaro ZL1 – the top run (so far) of Chevy’s muscle car lineup – will put out around 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, that’s all subject to change…

China’s Guaungzhou Auto Corp may have not approved it, but the first look at the company’s new X-Power crossover has trickled out onto the internet. According to ChinaCarTimes, the automaker just recently purchased the Alfa Romeo 166 platform from the Italian manufacturer, and the X-Power is the second model that we’ve seen arise from those bones. Judging from the photos, the production take on the CUV wears much of the same styling as the concept version, though it would seem that the taillight design has received some tweaks.

ChinaCarTimes reports that the X-Power will hit the streets with an Alfa-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with around 163 horsepower when it debuts. GAC has also used the 166 platform for its Trumpchi sedan, which is powered by the same 2.0-liter engine.

Chinese car buyers can look forward to seeing the X-Power in showrooms soon. No launch date has been released, but the vehicle is slated for an unveil at next month’s Shanghai Motor Show.

General Motors is finishing up the development of the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu (to be marketed as Epica in other markets), and this almost-done prototype gives us a very good glimpse as to what’s in store for the all-new ‘Bu.

The Malibu will ride on the shortened version of GM’s Epsilon II platform – the architecture that underpins both the Buick Regal and LaCrosse – though our spies note that the new car seems to be a bit longer and wider than the model currently on sale. Chevy’s signature Bowtie grille is nicely incorporated into a decidedly LaCrosse-inspired front end, but we aren’t quite sure how we feel about the Camaro-like taillamps and longer rear deck. Still, we’ll wait until the camouflage is stripped away before making final judgments.

Following Korea’s lead with the Hyundai Sonata, GM is expected to only offer four-cylinder powertrains in the 2012 Malibu, so look for both a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter and turbocharged 2.0-liter engine to be on tap. Additionally, a hybrid configuration is reportedly in the works, as is all-wheel drive.

Production is scheduled to kick off at the end of this year, so we’re betting that the Malibu will officially debut at the New York Auto Show next month. Click through our high-res image gallery below to see the latest set of spy shots for yourself.

Report: House panel attempting to block EPA from regulating tailpipe emissions

                                      greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions

The Clean Air Act of 2007 gave the Environmental Protection Agency the right to regulate tailpipe emissions due to their dangers to public health. The law also gave states like California the right to set their own emissions policies; a move that could force automakers to meet several different standards in the U.S. alone. That led the federal government to essentially adopt California’s standard, resulting in a mandate of 34.1 miles per gallon by 2016.

The Detroit News reports that Fred Upton, R-MI and Ed Whitfield, R-KY have sponsored a bill in the House Energy and Commerce Committee that would overturn the Clean Air Act. The proposed measure would remove emissions regulations authority from the EPA and individual states, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration instead having sole authority to set corporate average fuel economy standards. “We feel it is not right that California should be dictating standards for the rest of the country,” said Whitfield.

The move may be well-received by automakers, since the current regulations in place will cost OEMs billions of dollars. In fact, experts claim the stiff regulations currently on the books will cost automakers up to $52 billion over the next five years. That’s a lot of cabbage, but the Obama Administration claims fuel economy improvements will save 1.8 billion barrels of oil and save car owners up to $3,000 over the life of the vehicle.

The sponsored bill has been given the go-ahead by the Energy and Power subcommittee, and The Detroit News claims house Republicans plan to fast-track the bill through Congress.

Hyundai has been on an extended roll these last few years, and car buyers have apparently noticed. The Korean automaker’s sales have been steadily climbing, and new products like the Sonata and Elantra only help matters. Winning new customers is obviously a large part of Hyundai’s recent success, but it’s important to keep current owners in the fold as well.

Hyundai is apparently doing just that, as Brand Keys has named Hyundai the brand with the best customer loyalty. Brand Keys President Robert Passikoff pointed out Hyundai’s ability to meet customer expectations, adding that the car maker “scored the highest levels of loyalty when it comes to the Automotive category.”

After Hyundai, the top six automakers were Ford at number two, followed by a tie for Honda and Nissan and another dead-lock for BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Hit the jump to read over the press release.
